Lions vs. Chargers Best Bet: Lions -1.5 (-110) at FanDuel Sportsbook
The Hall of Fame game is always tricky to call because both teams tend to hold back. The starting quarterbacks on both sides will sit this one out, making this game about which side has more depth with backups and third-string players getting most of the reps.
The Chargers are sitting their top two quarterbacks, giving Trey Lance the start with undrafted rookie D.J. Uiagalelei most of the snaps. Given the way that Lance has bounced around the league, he’s far from a sure thing to excel in a preseason game while surrounded by backups. The Lions have also built up a lot more roster depth, giving them a better chance to win the battle of the backups.
On the other side, the Lions will have Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen splitting time at quarterback. These two are locked in a position battle to be Jared Goff’s backup, so both will be motivated to play their best and take an early lead in that position battle. Allen, in particular, has a fair amount of playing experience, so he should do well in a preseason game.
Finally, Dan Campbell should always get the benefit of the doubt. His competitive fire will show, even in the preseason. The Lions are 4-2 in the preseason over the past two seasons, whereas the Chargers failed to score a touchdown in their first two preseason games last season. That has us thinking the Lions will win this game comfortably.
