The Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs will battle in a primetime special headlined by Patrick Mahomes’ resurgence and an unfortunate injury to Jayden Daniels.

The Chiefs are only 4-3, but they are climbing in Super Bowl odds after recovering from their 0-2 start to the season. The Commanders are 3-4 just one season after they went to the NFC Championship Game, in part because they’ve been bitten by the injury bug.

Jayden Daniels has already been ruled out, paving the way for Marcus Mariota to make the start. The Commanders still have one of the best offenses in the league, even with Mariota, but their abysmal defense is in for a tough challenge against what has been the class of the AFC.

Marcus Mariota Under 197.5 Passing Yards (-110) at bet365 Sportsbook 

Mariota had 207 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders’ terrible defense in his first start of the season and bounced back with 156 yards against the Atlanta Falcons a week later. He’s now about to face a terrific defensive coordinator with receivers who, while back on the field, are just coming off of injuries.

The key for the Commanders to survive in this game is to run the football. That includes options and designed runs for Mariota, who I believe is likely to beat this line with total yards, but not strictly passing yards.

The Commanders are 21st in points allowed per game, 25th in passing yards allowed per game, dead last in yards allowed per attempt. Their cornerbacks have gotten killed outside the numbers, their safeties haven’t tackled well, and Bobby Wagner’s lack of speed over the middle of the field has been fatal. 

Worthy’s speed makes him a threat after the catch, and he can also create mismatches with pre-snap motion that has also befuddled the Commanders’ D. Any way you slice it, there’s real value here for one of Mahomes’ top targets.

Realistically, one catch should get the seventh-round rookie past this line. He had gone over in four straight games until he caught one pass for -1 yard last week, but he has caught a pass in five straight outings.

With the Chiefs having a strong defense, and with Mariota at QB, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Croskey-Merritt catch a screen pass or a check-down from Mariota—especially if he can’t get going like he couldn’t the last couple of weeks, when he averaged just 3.1 yards per carry.
