2020 Australian Open Men's Singles: Day 4 Predictions and Odds

Event Information

When: Wednesday, January 22nd-Thursday, January 23rd

Where: Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia

What’s at Stake?

This is the final day of the second round.

Winners will be only one match away from playing in the second week.

Advancing into the third round nets at least 90 points in the ATP ranking and AU$180,000 in prize money.

A second-round exit, on the other hand, pays 45 points and AU$128,000.

Alex Bolt vs. Dominic Thiem

Head to head record: 0-0

This is their first meeting at the ATP Tour level.

Thiem and Bolt have faced each other twice at Challenger tournaments, with a 1-1 record.

Their careers, however, have taken significantly different paths.

Thiem is the clear favorite, and the top 5 ranked players should advance without too many problems.

Prediction: Dominic Thiem 3-0

Spread: Dominic Thiem -7.5

Totals: Under 27.5

Andreas Seppi vs. Stan Wawrinka

Head to head record: Wawrinka leads 9-3

After struggling with injuries for the past two years, Wawrinka finally returned to full-time competition in 2019.

The three-time major champion is now back in the top 15 and is set to continue his climb in 2020.

Wawrinka has one of the toughest matchups among seeded players, going up against a former top 20 player.

However, Seppi’s best days are already behind him, and while he will likely put up a fight, the 2014 Australian Open champion is the favorite.

Prediction: Stan Wawrinka 3-1

Spread: Stan Wawrinka -3.5

Totals: Over 38.5

Rafael Nadal vs. Federico Delbonis

Head to head record: Nadal leads 3-0

Nadal had an easy first-round match, defeating Hugo Dellien in straight sets while dropping only five games.

Delbonis also won in straight sets, sending João Sousa home.

The two have met three times before, with Nadal winning all three matches without dropping a single set.

And that’s not all, as Nadal has only surrendered a total of two break points in the three meetings.

This is another fairly easy matchup for the ATP ranking leader, as the Spaniard continues to chase his 20th slam.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal 3-0

Spread: Rafael Nadal -11.5

Totals: Under 26.5

Daniil Medvedev vs. Pedro Martinez

Head to head record: 0-0

Medvedev won a difficult first-round match, eliminating rising star Francis Tiafoe in four sets.

Surprisingly, he will have a much easier task ahead of him in the second round.

His opponent is going to be Pedro Martínez, a young player coming off a first career ATP Tour win.

The Russian star should have little trouble dispatching his opponent this time.

Prediction: Daniil Medvedev 3-0

Spread: Daniil Medvedev -7.5

Nick Kyrgios vs. Gilles Simon

Head to head record: Kyrgios leads 1-0

Predicting Kyrgios’ games is always tricky, as the Australian star is as mercurial as it gets.

Surprisingly, these two players have only met once at the ATP Tour level.

Kyrgios won the match in the second round of last year’s Washington Open.

This is a very difficult match, as Simon is a former top 10 player and has reached the Australian Open quarterfinals once.

While his best days are already behind, the Frenchman is a dangerous opponent.

However, Kyrgios is well-known for showing up when it matters in front of the home crowd.

It will be a close one, but the Australian takes it.

Prediction: Nick Kyrgios 3-1

Spread: Gilles Simon +5.5

Over: 40.5
