Ahead of the third-place play-off against England on Saturday, Maignan has kept four clean sheets so far this World Cup - including three in the knockout phase. But the fact that France lost 2-0 to Spain in the semi-finals has greatly decreased Maignan’s chances of being named the tournament’s outstanding goalkeeper. The AC Milan custodian is an outsider at the time of writing.

Jordan Pickford (England)

Jordan Pickford has never played in the Champions League at club level, having spent most of his career at Everton. But although his profile is not as high as the likes of Alisson Becker, Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois, he has been one of England’s most important players over the last decade or so, as the Everton man closes in on 100 caps. 

Yet Pickford has not had his best tournament. England have been better going forward than they have defensively, and while the goalkeeper is not the sole reason for that, he will probably be a little disappointed with some of his contributions. Even if Pickford delivers a perfect performance against France on Saturday, it is hard to envisage him winning the Golden Glove.

Yassine Bounou (Morocco)

The Golden Glove can be awarded to any goalkeeper in the competition. It does not have to go to the shot-stopper of a team that reaches the final, or even the semi-final. As such, Yassine Bounou remains in contention to claim the prize. However, it would be a huge shock if the award went to someone who only played six matches at the World Cup rather than eight.

There is no doubt that Bounou was excellent for Morocco. He kept a clean sheet against Scotland in the group phase and another against Canada in the round of 16. Bounou also helped Morocco win a penalty shoot-out against the Netherlands, before saving a Kylian Mbappe penalty in the last eight as France knocked Morocco out. He had a fine tournament, but will almost certainly not win the Golden Glove.
