World Cup 2026 is just around the corner, with the action set to begin on June 11. With 48 teams taking part for the first time, this is the largest ever edition of soccer’s flagship tournament.
The USA, Canada and Mexico are the co-hosts for the upcoming event, which has never before been held in more than two different countries. Most of the world’s best players will descend on North America this summer with the dream of becoming a world champion. As the tournament approaches, fans and bettors alike are eagerly diving into the latest World Cup odds and predictions to see which nations are favored to lift the coveted trophy.
As well as the fight for the trophy, it will also be worth watching the race to win the Golden Ball, the award given to the best individual performer at the World Cup. In this article, we have taken a look at some of the contenders for that prestigious prize, as well as examining the history of the Golden Ball.
At the time of writing, the official odds for the World Cup Golden Ball have not yet been published by the best World Cup betting sites and apps.
We will update this page with the confirmed prices, as well as the most lucrative World Cup betting promos, as soon as they have been released. For the time being, here is our interpretation of the candidates for the award.
France have reached the last two World Cup finals, winning one and losing the other. In both campaigns, Kylian Mbappe was right at the heart of their efforts - and that will be the case again this summer. Ditto Harry Kane with England. The striker is having a wonderful season with Bayern Munich and he is desperate to finally win a trophy for his country.
The precociously talented teenager Lamine Yamal may end up leading the charge for Spain, two years on from his starring role at Euro 2024. Vinicius Junior is Brazil’s main man this time around, while Argentina will hope that Lionel Messi has one last big tournament showing in him, despite persistent doubts over whether he will even play the World Cup.

Norway are not one of the favorites to win the World Cup this summer, yet Erling Haaland is a potential dark horse for the Golden Ball. If he can fire Norway into the latter stages, the striker will be in contention. Bruno Fernandes has been consistently excellent for club and country over the last few years, arguably making him rather than Cristiano Ronaldo the leading Portuguese candidate.
Messi is past his peak these days, so others will need to step up for Argentina. Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid could be the man to lead the charge. Jude Bellingham looks set to start as England’s No.10, while Declan Rice is their driving force in midfield. For France, Michael Olise could rival Kylian Mbappe for the award.

Although Lamine Yamal will attract most of the attention that ends up going in Spain’s direction, Pedri and Rodri are alternative Golden Ball contenders for la Roja. If Germany were to have a successful summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico, one of Florian Wirtz or Jamal Musiala could emerge as leading candidates in this market.
Attacking players tend to win the Golden Ball, but Virgil van Dijk probably has the best chance of any defender given his high profile and his importance to the Netherlands. In terms of other central midfielders. Vitinha of Portugal, Luka Modric of Croatia and Enzo Fernandez of Argentina are outsiders.

Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated market, not a sportsbook. It is legal in many US states where sports betting is not, making it the perfect alternative for those residing in particular parts of the country.
Instead of betting on the World Cup Golden Ball in the traditional way with odds such as +500, you buy ‘yes’ shares. For example, tipping Harry Kane to win the Golden Ball might cost 25 cents per share, which implies a 25 percent chance of success.
What are the advantages of Kalshi? The most obvious one is its legal status. For aspiring sports bettors living in states such as California and Texas, Kalshi is your best option. And because Kalshi is fully regulated at the federal level, it is an option for people based in states where sports betting is legal too.
There are other benefits too. Whereas traditional sportsbooks charge a vig on losing wagers, this does not exist for Kalshi, which often has tighter spreads as well. Finally, you have the option of selling your position during the tournament if the price spikes. If sports betting is not legal in your home state, Kalshi is the best alternative.

Kylian Mbappe was the Golden Ball runner-up at the World Cup four years ago, and he is determined to get over the line this time around. The France international memorably scored a hat-trick in the final in Qatar, as he almost dragged his country to another title. Now 27 years old, he has only improved since the last edition.
Mbappe has become a more prolific goalscorer at Real Madrid, where he has spent the last two seasons of his club career. France have an abundance of offensive quality at their disposal, but there is no doubt that Mbappe is their main man up front.
Harry Kane has had a wonderful career, but this season has been the best he has ever produced. The England captain has scored more than a half-century of goals for Bayern Munich, and he remains the most important player for his national team too. Kane will start whenever he is fit and fresh this summer.
Kane is not the only world-class member of Thomas Tuchel’s squad, yet if the Three Lions have a successful tournament, their starting striker would probably be in pole position to become the first ever English winner of the Golden Ball.
Neymar still has an outside chance of being named in Brazil’s World Cup squad. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward is the Selecao’s all-time leading goalscorer, but even if he is involved in North America, this team is now led by Vinicius Junior.
The Real Madrid man does not have the best record for the national team, but his past inconsistency will be forgiven if he can inspire Brazil to glory this summer. Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti brought the best out of Vinicius at Madrid, so Brazilians are now hoping he can do the same again. If Brazil win the tournament, Vinicius will be the Golden Ball favorite.
Lamine Yamal dazzled soccer audiences when he helped Spain win the European Championship in 2024, back when he was just 16 years of age. Now 18, it is easy to forget how young Yamal is when you watch him work his magic on the soccer field. It is not just his natural gifts that are so impressive, but his maturity and decision-making too.
Spain are one of the strongest national teams around right now, so there is a good chance they will go far at the upcoming tournament. If Yamal is la Roja’s standout performer and Spain go on to win the World Cup, he will probably earn himself the Golden Ball.
Lionel Messi continues to talk cryptically about the World Cup, casting doubt on whether he will even be involved this summer. It is still more likely than not that Messi lines up as part of Argentina’s squad in North America, but his participation is by no means certain just over a month out from the big kick-off.
If he does play, Messi will be a key part of Argentina’s title defense. But he is not the player he once was, and it remains to be seen whether he is capable of playing every few days for five weeks at the age of 39. Still, Messi’s extraordinary talent means a third Golden Ball (he won the award in 2014 and 2022) cannot be ruled out.
The World Cup Golden Ball was introduced for the 1982 edition of the competition, and it has been awarded to the tournament’s best player every four years since then. The runner-up has been given the Silver Ball, with the third-place finisher receiving the Bronze Ball. In the table below, you can see which players have been officially recognized at the end of a World Cup.
