World Cup 2026 is just around the corner, with the action set to begin on June 11. With 48 teams taking part for the first time, this is the largest ever edition of soccer’s flagship tournament.
The USA, Canada and Mexico are the co-hosts for the upcoming event, which has never before been held in more than two different countries. Most of the world’s best players will descend on North America this summer with the dream of becoming a world champion. As the tournament approaches, fans and bettors alike are eagerly diving into the latest World Cup odds and predictions to see which nations are favored to lift the coveted trophy.
As well as the fight for the trophy, it will also be worth watching the race to win the Golden Ball, the award given to the best individual performer at the World Cup. In this article, we have taken a look at some of the contenders for that prestigious prize, as well as examining the history of the Golden Ball.
At the time of writing, the official odds for the World Cup Golden Ball have not yet been published by the best World Cup betting sites and apps.
We will update this page with the confirmed prices, as well as the most lucrative World Cup betting promos, as soon as they have been released. For the time being, here is our interpretation of the candidates for the award.
France’s quest for World Cup glory in Didier Deschamps’s final tournament as manager will be led by Kylian Mbappe, who is enjoying a wonderful individual season with Real Madrid. The same is true of Harry Kane at Bayern Munich, with the England captain no doubt targeting the Golden Ball as well as the Golden Boot at the upcoming World Cup.
The precociously talented teenager Lamine Yamal may end up leading the charge for Spain, two years on from his starring role at Euro 2024. Vinicius Junior is Brazil’s main man this time around, while Argentina will hope that Lionel Messi has one last big tournament showing in him.

If Erling Haaland fires Norway into the latter stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history, he would be right up there among Golden Ball contenders. Bruno Fernandes has been consistently excellent for club and country over the last few years, arguably making him rather than Cristiano Ronaldo the leading Portuguese candidate.
Julian Alvarez was key for Argentina when they won World Cup 2022, and he could have a significant role to play this summer too. Matheus Cunha is the current favorite to start up front for Brazil, making him a potential contender for the Golden Ball. The same is true of England midfielder Jude Bellingham and France forward Michael Olise.

Although Lamine Yamal will attract most of the attention that ends up going in Spain’s direction, Pedri and Rodri are alternative Golden Ball contenders for la Roja. If Germany were to have a successful summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico, one of Florian Wirtz or Jamal Musiala could emerge as leading choices in this market.
Could a defender win the Golden Ball? Virgil van Dijk of the Netherlands is perhaps the likeliest recipient of the prize, with Brazil’s Gabriel Magalhaes another center-back to keep an eye on. Declan Rice (England), Vitinha (Portugal) and Luka Modric (Croatia) are among the other contenders in midfield.

Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated market, not a sportsbook. It is legal in many US states where sports betting is not, making it the perfect alternative for those residing in particular parts of the country.
Instead of betting on the World Cup Golden Ball in the traditional way with odds such as +500, you buy ‘yes’ shares. For example, tipping Harry Kane to win the Golden Ball might cost 25 cents per share, which implies a 25 percent chance of success.
What are the advantages of Kalshi? The most obvious one is its legal status. For aspiring sports bettors living in states such as California and Texas, Kalshi is your best option. And because Kalshi is fully regulated at the federal level, it is an option for people based in states where sports betting is legal too.
There are other benefits too. Whereas traditional sportsbooks charge a vig on losing wagers, this does not exist for Kalshi, which often has tighter spreads as well. Finally, you have the option of selling your position during the tournament if the price spikes. If sports betting is not legal in your home state, Kalshi is the best alternative.

Kylian Mbappe was the Golden Ball runner-up at the World Cup four years ago, and he is determined to get over the line this time around. Now 27 years of age, Mbappe is arguably at his peak. France are not short of attacking talent, but there is no doubt the Real Madrid forward will start as long as he is fit.
Mbappe is both a big-game player and someone who can score goals against weaker opposition. With France among the favorites to win the World Cup, Mbappe has a real shot at scooping the Golden Ball this summer.
Harry Kane is having the best individual season of his career, and the Bayern Munich striker will soon turn his attention back to the national team. Kane is one of the best center-forwards in world soccer. Not only does he score a huge number of goals, he is also a creative force for Bayern and England.
Kane is not the only world-class member of Thomas Tuchel’s squad, yet if the Three Lions have a successful tournament, their starting striker would probably be in pole position to become the first English winner of the Golden Ball.
Neymar was Brazil’s long-time talisman, but that is no longer the case. Vinicius Junior has taken over that mantle and he will be desperate to lead the Selecao to glory in North America. Vinicius’ record for Brazil is mixed, but Carlo Ancelotti has already shown that he knows how to get the best out of the forward.
With the likes of Joao Pedro, Matheus Cunha and Raphinha also in the mix, Brazil are not necessarily reliant on Vinicius. But the Real Madrid man is their most likely winner of the Golden Ball at World Cup 2026.
Lamine Yamal dazzled soccer audiences when he helped Spain win the European Championship in 2024, back when he was just 16 years of age. Now 18, it is easy to forget how young Yamal is when you watch him work his magic on the soccer field.
Spain are one of the strongest national teams around right now, so there is a good chance they will go far at the upcoming tournament. If Yamal is la Roja’s standout performer and Spain win the World Cup, he will probably earn himself the Golden Ball.
Could he do it again? The Golden Ball winner in 2014 and 2022 has not given up hopes of making it a hat-trick this summer. It will be difficult for Lionel Messi to triumph this time, not least because he is approaching his 39th birthday.
But given his track record and his ability to conserve energy over the course of a tournament, Messi cannot be written off. Argentina will not give up their trophy without a fight, so the Inter Miami star must be considered a Golden Ball candidate.
The World Cup Golden Ball was introduced for the 1982 edition of the competition, and it has been awarded to the tournament’s best player every four years since then. The runner-up has been given the Silver Ball, with the third-place finisher receiving the Bronze Ball.
