World Cup Golden Ball 2026 Odds Harry Kane

The Favorites - Lionel Messi, Rodri

This will be Lionel Messi’s last World Cup and he is desperate to go out with a bang. Despite being 39 years old, Messi has shown he is still one of the best players on the planet this summer. No one has scored more goals and only Michael Olise has provided more assists than Argentina’s talisman. If Messi is on the winning side on Sunday, he will claim a record-extending third Golden Ball.

Rodri suffered a serious knee injury with Manchester City in 2024 and there were fears that he would not be the same player again. But this World Cup has shown that Rodri is gradually getting back to his best. He has improved as the tournament has gone on, masterminding Spain’s controlled possession in midfield. If he stars on Sunday and Spain wins the final, Rodri will have a great chance of the Golden Ball.

The Challengers - Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal

Lamine Yamal was injured in the build-up to the World Cup, and he was not fully fit when the tournament began. That is the principal reason why it took Yamal a while to grow into the event, and we have still not seen the very best that the 18-year-old has to offer. But if Yamal can inspire Spain to victory over Argentina this weekend, he will have an excellent chance of winning the Golden Ball.

Mikel Oyarzabal is not the biggest name in the world of soccer, but he has been an integral part of the Spain national team over the last couple of years. Oyarzabal has scored five goals in North America and has impressed with his link play up front. Oyarzabal contributes in the build-up phase and is also adept at creating openings for his team-mates. A couple of goals in the final would put him in the mix.

The Value - Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe

Jude Bellingham has been more important to the England cause than anyone else this summer. He has scored six goals so far, including two against Mexico and two against Norway in the knockout phase. With his drive, skill and spirit, Bellingham emerged as the on-field leader for England. Yet despite his exceptional performances, England’s loss to Argentina in the semis has put a huge dent in his chances.

Kylian Mbappe did not win a trophy with Real Madrid in the 2025/26 campaign and he will not be picking up silverware this summer either. Mbappe was quiet as France lost to Spain in the semi-finals, but he has had a brilliant tournament overall. The France captain has scored eight goals up to now, and he could increase his tally in the third-place play-off. But the Golden Ball is unlikely to belong to Mbappe.

The "Kalshi" Alternative: Trading on the Golden Ball

Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated market, not a sportsbook. It is legal in many US states where sports betting is not, making it the perfect alternative for those residing in particular parts of the country.

Instead of betting on the World Cup Golden Ball in the traditional way with odds such as +500, you buy ‘yes’ shares. For example, tipping Harry Kane to win the Golden Ball might cost 25 cents per share, which implies a 25 percent chance of success.

What are the advantages of Kalshi? The most obvious one is its legal status. For aspiring sports bettors living in states such as California and Texas, Kalshi is your best option. And because Kalshi is fully regulated at the federal level, it is an option for people based in states where sports betting is legal too.

There are other benefits too. Whereas traditional sportsbooks charge a vig on losing wagers, this does not exist for Kalshi, which often has tighter spreads as well. Finally, you have the option of selling your position during the tournament if the price spikes. If sports betting is not legal in your home state, Kalshi is the best alternative.

Golden Ball Favorites Predictions and Analysis

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the race for the prestigious Golden Ball features a star-studded lineup of international football's biggest names. Here are five of the leading contenders to win the Golden Ball at the upcoming World Cup in North America.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Some wondered whether this would prove to be a World Cup too far for Lionel Messi. The Argentina international is 39 years of age and he has spent the last few seasons in MLS. The American league has made great strides in recent years, but it is still not at the same level as the major European divisions. The doubts over Messi were understandable, yet perhaps we should never have questioned the magician.

Messi has scored in all but one of his nation’s fixtures so far, including a hat-trick against Algeria, a brace against Austria, and crucial knockout goals against Cape Verde and Egypt. Argentina has not been entirely convincing since the group stage, but Messi is still delivering at the highest level of international soccer. He is the second-favorite to win the Golden Ball at the time of writing.

Rodri (Spain)

Earlier in the tournament, many wondered whether Rodri had lost his shine. A serious knee injury suffered in 2024 had appeared to reduce his mobility, leaving him vulnerable to quicker, more dynamic midfielders. Yet Rodri’s last few appearances have shown how foolish it was to write him off. The Manchester City man has been terrific for Spain in the knockout phase of the World Cup.

Spain’s game is built on patient, probing possession, and Rodri is the midfield metronome at the heart of it. He is an expert at keeping the game ticking over and deciding which pass to use at each moment. He does not score as many goals or provide as many assists as other Golden Ball contenders, but Spain would not be the same team without Rodri in the center of the field.

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Spain fans were anxious when news emerged of Lamine Yamal suffering an injury ahead of the World Cup. He faced a race against time to be fit, and although the teenager was able to make a second-half appearance as a substitute against Cape Verde on matchday one, he was visibly not fully fit. It then took Yamal a few games to get up to speed with the tournament.

Yamal has still not hit top form this summer, yet he has been crucial to the Spain cause. The Barcelona wide man brings an X-factor that would be absent from Luis de la Fuente’s team if he was sidelined. Yamal has only scored one goal and has provided no assists, but a strong showing in the World Cup final would keep him in the hunt for the Golden Ball.

Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)

Mikel Oyarzabal has scored five goals for Spain, more than any of his team-mates. He is not a world-class striker in the mould of Harry Kane, Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe, yet he has a better chance than any of that trio of winning the Golden Ball. Oyarzabal is the perfect center-forward for this Spain team because of his ability to link the play and join up the midfield with the attack.

Argentina’s central defenders will not relish facing him in the final on Sunday. If Oyarzabal could score a brace or a hat-trick and deliver a Player of the Match display against Argentina, he would be a strong candidate to win the Golden Ball. But unless he has the game of his life at the MetLife Stadium, the prize will probably not go to Oyarzabal.

Jude Bellingham (England)

Thomas Tuchel made some big calls when selecting his England squad for World Cup 2026. Phil Foden and Cole Palmer were among the high-profile absentees, as Tuchel decided to build his team around Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder has shown exactly why his manager chose to do that with a series of stellar showings in North America over the last few weeks.

Bellingham notched braces against Mexico and Norway in the knockout phase, having previously scored twice in the group stage. He has been used as a central midfielder at times, but the Real Madrid man does his best work in the No.10 role. Bellingham is a man for the big occasion, but England’s defeat by Argentina in the semi-finals will probably put the Golden Ball beyond him.

Past Winners of the World Cup Golden Ball

The World Cup Golden Ball was introduced for the 1982 edition of the competition, and it has been awarded to the tournament’s best player every four years since then. The runner-up has been given the Silver Ball, with the third-place finisher receiving the Bronze Ball. In the table below, you can see which players have been officially recognized at the end of a World Cup.
