Wales were insipid in the first half of their opening game against the USA. The introduction of Kieffer Moore at half-time turned the match in their favor, though, with Gareth Bale notching a deserved equalizer from the penalty spot. Wales now have an excellent chance to move onto four points in Group B on Friday.
Iran did not give a true account of their ability in a 6-2 loss to England last time out. The players may have been distracted by the protests back home, for which they showed their support by refusing to sing the national anthem
Carlos Queiroz’s side were unusually ragged at the back against England, and the likes of Moore, Bale, and Harry Wilson could cause them problems here. We fancy Wales to pick up their first World Cup win since 1958.

Qatar were hugely disappointing on the opening night of the World Cup. Having won the Asian Cup in 2019 and reached the semi-finals of last year’s Gold Cup, more was expected from a nation that has been building towards this moment for 12 years.
Qatar are not out of the tournament yet, but they almost certainly need to win this match to stand a chance of advancing to the round of 16. At the very least, this is a must-not-lose encounter for Senegal, who went down 2-0 to the Netherlands on Monday.
The African champions turned in a decent performance against the Dutch, but they lacked a clinical edge in the final third. If they can improve in that area of the pitch, a win awaits on Friday.

The history of the World Cup, particularly in the modern era, shows that you do not necessarily need to start strongly in order to win the tournament. Spain lost their opener in 2010. Germany did not really get going in 2014 until the quarter-finals. France were mediocre in the group phase four years ago.
A labored performance against Senegal will therefore not overly bother Louis van Gaal, whose side still managed to win 2-0 thanks to late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen. Another win on Friday could book the Dutch’s place in the round of 16.
Ecuador were not really tested by Qatar last weekend, so it is still hard to know how good they are. Avoiding defeat by Van Gaal’s Netherlands will be tough, though.

England turned in an excellent all-round performance in their 6-2 thrashing of Iran last time out. Gareth Southgate selected a more attack-minded team than usual and his boldness was rewarded with terrific displays from the likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Harry Kane.
The USA made a bright start to their game against Wales and deservedly held the lead at half-time, as Timothy Weah finished coolly after being played through by Christian Pulisic. But they allowed the Welsh back into the match after the break, with Gareth Bale equalizing from the penalty spot.
The USA will do well to keep out an England team which is among the leading contenders to win this tournament. Southgate’s side will surely prove too strong.
