Almost 8 Million New Sportsbook Accounts Created in Missouri
The Missouri sports betting market has gotten off to a hot start.
According to GeoComply, a geolocation company used by sportsbooks, around 7.5 million new accounts were created in the first week of sports betting in the state. Around 250,000 of those accounts were created on December 1, when the market went live.
While the initial handle and revenue numbers remain unknown, the massive influx of new accounts is a fantastic sign. At the same time, many new to Missouri bettors have existing sportsbook accounts from visiting states with legal markets. Those bettors aren’t included in the 7.5 million new accounts, making the number even more impressive.
The company reported an uptick in action during the Kansas City Chiefs’ game over the weekend. There were roughly 43,000 location checks around the 76,000+ seat stadium.
The Chiefs lost the game and failed to cover the spread, meaning sportsbooks likely saw a strong first week. That is welcome news for operators, who have taken a beating during the 2025 NFL season.
Too Early To Tell Impact of Prediction Markets
The initial numbers from GeoComply are a good sign, but they only tell a small part of the story.
Among the most interesting results we are awaiting is the volume seen in sports prediction markets during the first week of legal sports betting in Missouri. Operators like Kalshi have been live in the market for months, giving them an early foothold. That makes the state’s market unique, as we have not seen a state legalize sports betting since the controversial industry took off.
The early numbers will tell us how many prediction market users switch to sportsbooks. Kalshi and other operators likely took a significant hit during the first week, but time will tell which industry bettors will choose.
