It seems sports betting may now be losing momentum in the Sooner State.
The Oklahoma Senate rejected HB 1047 this week, a bill that could have legalized both the retail and mobile industries. There was hope for a late push to get the bill to the Governor’s desk, but those hopes were dashed when the bill was defeated 21-27.
It proposed a tribal-run market, which ultimately ensured its defeat.
Governor Kevin Stitt has been vocal about his refusal to sign off on any tribal-run Oklahoma sports betting market. He had clashed with tribal leaders in the past, believing they were holding the state hostage over sports betting.
“Governor Stitt has been clear that he will only support a free market approach to sports betting in Oklahoma,” a statement from the Governor’s office to The Oklahoman read. “No legislation has reached his desk yet, so we won’t comment on specifics of pending legislation. The Governor is not interested in expanding Democrat Gov. Brad Henry’s bad gaming compact that lacks transparency and fair market rates.”
The Governor’s strong opposition has led many lawmakers to drop their support for tribal-led proposals, as shown by the latest Senate vote.
Stitt’s use of partisan attacks is hiding his true message, which needs to be heard.
While tribal-run markets provide an easier path to legalization, states would have far less control over them. That means less tax revenue, especially if the gaming tribes are unable to provide platforms that bettors enjoy. It also could result in fewer promos and watered-down odds for bettors.
We’ve seen bad platforms and poor pricing hamper legal sports betting over the years, and that was before the emergence of sports prediction markets. With these remaining legal in all 50 states, bettors now have an alternate option to wager on sports.
The fear is that creating a subpar market will lead to problem gambling skyrocketing, but not enough funds to support programs to help those who are struggling.
Stitt’s term as Governor is up this year, with his replacement to be chosen during November’s midterm elections.
