We have a busy day as the Group stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 draws to a close. West Indies take on Afghanistan in an inconsequential fixture with both teams having already booked their spots in the Super Eight.
Over in Group C, we have the strong Kiwis taking on Papua New Guinea with the highlight being that this would be Trent Boult’s last T20 World Cup game. It is again irrelevant to how the tournament would progress with both New Zealand and PNG knocked out already.
All eyes will, however, be on the West Indies vs Afghanistan game with the latter presenting a strong case of toppling big teams with the conditions going in favor of their irresistible spin attack.

West Indies face a stiff challenge ahead of the Super Eight with Afghanistan’s strong attack up against them at St Lucia. Luckily, the pitch at this venue in Gros Islet hasn't been as troublesome as some of other surfaces this tournament has been played on. Despite this, Afghanistan have the bowling attack to trouble top teams on any surface and the biggest threat from them here will come from their spinners.
West Indies' best bet to tackle this is Nicholas Pooran, renowned for his spin hitting in T20 leagues around the globe. Pooran has been in outstanding form in T20s in 2024 and comes off the back of a stellar IPL 2024 where he inflicted serious damage against the spinners. He's yet to make a big impact this tournament but has gotten starts in every game. Before the Super Eight, West Indies will want Pooran to hit his straps and a big score against this Afghanistan bowling will also boost his confidence.
Back Pooran to be West Indies’ top run-scorer in this game.
Rashid Khan will be Afghanistan's key bowler on this deck where Scotland and Australia played out a high-scoring game. West Indies' big-hitting batters will pose a significant threat on this deck and Rashid will be tasked with putting a leash on the scoring rate.
With his experience across the globe in high-scoring flat decks, Rashid will know exactly what he wants to do here to stop the West Indies batters. The leg-spinner has six wickets in three games with Fazalhaq Farooqi leading the bowling charts for Afghanistan.
But here in St Lucia, Farooqi may not be as big a factor for West Indies' batters and the onus will be on Rashid to deliver. Expect the quick leg-spinner to make an impact in this game with the ball in hand.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz has 379 runs in 13 T20Is in 2024 for Afghanistan. 167 of those have come in the T20 World Cup, where he's leading the batting charts as the top run-scorer. A major difference to Afghanistan's campaign this time around in the T20 World Cup is that it's not just the bowlers who are punching above their weight.
The openers have set the tone for Afghanistan in most games and Gurbaz was clinical in doing so, with impactful knocks against New Zealand and Uganda. The opener will want to hit top gear on a good batting pitch ahead of the more challenging Super Eight games and with West Indies not having a great bowling attack overall, expect Gurbaz to once come out all guns blazing.

New Zealand aim to bow out on a high and against a bowling attack that has struggled for control in this tournament, opener Finn Allen will be the biggest factor. Known for his swashbuckling style of batting, Allen hasn't had pitches conducive to make a significant impact yet. But with the PNG attack and Trinidad surface aligning with his style of batting, Allen might be able to make a big score here, especially if New Zealand get to bat first.
With 361 runs in 11 T20Is in 2024, Allen is New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in the format. He averages 32.82 and could set the tone for New Zealand with the bat in the Powerplay. Back him to be the top run-scorer in their final game of the T20 World Cup.
Devon Conway, Finn Allen’s opening partner, is the anchor at the top for New Zealand and relies on timing and innings-building rather than the aggressive route his partner prefers. Conway is more likely to make consistent scores rather than play a high-impact knock like Allen. This is reflected in his overall T20 numbers, where he averages 38.14 for the Kiwis.
Against an opponent like PNG, expect Conway to build a good score, making his odds of scoring over 26.5 pretty good. Bank on this safe bet in a game where we could have more uncertainties with middle-order batters and top bowlers.
