Team Liquid are favored quite strongly by the bookmakers for this match, but there wasn’t much between these two sides last season. Neither of them qualified for the playoffs, with team Liquid doing slightly better. They had a win rate of 44% compared to Immortals’ 22%.
Both sides have made a good start to this campaign with wins in their first match. Another win could be massive for their playoff hopes, as no one likes to play catch-up early in the season. Team Liquid’s win came against DRG, who are a bit of an unknown quantity in the LCS, whereas Immortals beat Dignitas, who finished last in the Spring season. Of course, Immortals won’t care too much about the opponent; you can only play what’s in front of you, and a win is a win.
Immortals offer excellent value in this match, so they’re worth a punt. Team Liquid offer very little value; they aren’t the sort of side you can fully trust when they offer little value, and they lost one of their matches to Immortals last season, so we think something similar might be on the cards again.
It’s a little hard at this stage to make out if Immortals have improved because they were expected to beat Dignitas in their first match of the season. Dignitas were the only team with a worse record than Immortals last season.
This is a very different test. Team Liquid have been a good team in recent years but disintegrated a little last season. Regardless of that, a win here would suggest that Immortals have improved since last season and might even have an outside shot at qualifying for the playoffs. If they win this match, they’ll only need to win three more games to have a better win rate than last season.
They’ve added some new names to the side: Solo, Treatz, and Joey. We still don’t know enough about them, but they’ll be expected to have an impact and improve the side. Of course, winning the first game will help their confidence.
They’ll most be hanging their hat on Bolulu to get them out of trouble this season. He has only played eight games this season, but has impressed since joining the team this year. He has averaged 3.13 kills per game, 1.38 deaths per game, and 5.88 assists per game. He seems to have all the qualities needed in a top mid laner.
Those stats are really impressive for a struggling team. It shows that he’s clearly got the talent to play for a top team. If Immortals want to get something out of this season, they must build their game around Bolulu’s strengths and throw in a few tactical surprises through their new members. This match gives them a fantastic opportunity to do both.
We need a larger sample size to know if Immortals have genuinely improved since last season. Until then, it’ll be hard to expect too much out of them but we think they have enough in the tank to get something against the likes of Team Liquid.
Team Liquid were inconsistent for all of last season but still managed to win their two matches against Immortals. Making the playoffs is the minimum expectation for a side with their quality, which is why last season was such a disappointment. They won eight of their 18 matches
Team Liquid are better in terms of quality, but they’ve disappointed in the past. They lost one of their matches against Immortals last season, so there’s no reason to believe they’re the superior side heading into this match.
They got off to a great start with a win over NRG, but their form heading into the tournament wasn’t the best. Another issue is a lack of signings. They haven’t really added anyone to the side despite their failures in the Spring season. They desperately needed to shake things up this summer; this would’ve given the franchise, the existing members of the roster and staff, and all the fans a little boost heading into the season.
This trick seems to have worked for Immortals so far, and Team Liquid would have benefitted from something similar. They have two decent talents in the squad currently: Haeri and Yeon. The former has averaged 3.47 kills per game, 2.84 deaths per game, and 4.37 assists per game this season. He has been a bit vulnerable defensively but has done quite well, all things considered.
Yeon has averaged 3.26 kills per game, 2.16 deaths per game, and 4.37 assists per game. Neither of them has impressed as much as Immortals Bolulu, so it’ll be interesting to see who comes out looking the best in this tie.
The bookies have Team Liquid winning this tie, but we don’t think they’re as safe a bet as the odds suggest. Immortals are quite capable of pulling off an upset.
