This should be a cracking tie between two of the top sides in the Liga MX currently. Club America currently sit at the very top of the Liga MX and are the team to beat with 31 points from 14 games.
Santos Laguna aren’t too far behind with 26 points from 14 games and in fourth place in the Liga MX standings. This game has been kinder to Club America in the past, who have registered 15 wins, eight losses and four draws in the 27 meetings between these two sides. This match promises to be highly competitive but it’s hard to see past another Club America victory as they’re the better team at the moment and have home advantage to go with that.
The last match between the two sides was a 3-2 thriller in favor of Club America back in February. Santos Laguna headed into this match as ever-so-slight favorites and took the lead twice in the game but couldn’t hold off Club America’s attack.
A Bruno Valdez own goal gave Santos Laguna the lead in the 10th minute but Club America got one back just three minutes later thanks to Diego Valdes. Doria put Santos Laguna in the lead again in the 41st minute but they couldn’t see out the lead before half-time as Salvador Reyes Chavez scored in the first minute of added in the first half.
Bruno Valdez got some redemption 12 minutes into the second half with a kick from the penalty spot which turned out to be the eventual winner. Liga MX fans will be hoping for yet another classic.
It wasn’t easy for Club America on the weekend but they showed signs of why they might win it all this season with a 2-1 win away from home against Necaxa. Facundo Batista found the net in the eighth minute for the home side but a great second-half showing with goals from Jonathan dos Santos and Roger Martínez settled the tie for Club America.
Club America had 63% of the possession but Necaxa got 12 shots on goal with six finding the target. It was another show of Club America’s mental fortitude which should hold them in good stead for the rest of the season.
Every great team, no matter what league they come from, will almost always have an excellent home record and that’s been the case for Club America this season. They’ve turned their home stadium into a fortress.
Beating them on any ground will be hard for most Liga MX sides but there’s an adage in football about how a team can win the tie in the tunnel and Club America have got that presence about them now. Santos Laguna will be one of their harder challenges but it’s hard to foresee any team getting points against Club America at the Azteca.
The last four matches which have involved Club America have had three or more goals. Club America tend to dominate possession, which will leave some space behind their backline. If an opportunity does arise, it’ll usually be quite a clear opportunity on goal and the opposition will have to be at their clinical best on the day.
They’ve also struggled to keep clean sheets recently, which is something they’ll be well aware of and want to change quickly.
Santos Laguna were part of the Liga MX game of the weekend in a 3-3 tie against Queretaro. They’ll be hoping that their next match doesn’t take as many twists and turns but it was ultimately a good point with Carlos Avecedo scoring an extremely late winner 10 minutes into the 90. Harold Preciado had put Santos Laguna ahead in the 25th minute before Angel Sepulveda and Juan Costa put the home side up before half-time.
Leonardo Suarez got a goal back for the visitors two minutes after the break before Etson Ayon Calderon’s 74th-minute strike looked like it could be the winner. It wasn’t to be Queretaro, who had taken 21 shots on Santos Laguna’s goal compared to the visitors’ 11. Santos Laguna will look at the positives, of course, and hope that they can match the fight against Club America.
One thing we can certainly say about this side is that they don’t know when they’re beaten. They were hanging on in the last match and this sort of resolve has been behind their recent form, losing just once in their last five matches.
This isn’t great when you compare it to Club America’s recent record but if there is any team that can slow down Club America’s ascent at the moment, it’s got to be a team like Santos Laguna. The likes of Harold Preciado, with six goals so far this season, will have to convert his chances when they come.
One massive concern for Santos Laguna this season has been the away form. They’ve averaged just 1 point per game away from home all season and they’re playing against a side that looks unbeatable on home turf. The reason Santos Laguna haven’t really felt like one of the elite sides in the league this season is because they don’t do enough in these away ties.
This is a great match to change the course of the Liga MX season and their own season. They need to approach the match with optimism and the nothing-to-lose mindset. If Necaxa could give Club America trouble on the weekend, Santos Laguna should certainly be capable of the same.
Santos Laguna have quite a few players out at this moment in time. Left winger, Ayrton Preciado, has been out since September with a tibia fracture. Center back, Doria, has been out with an ankle injury since late July.
Center back, Oscar Manzanarez, has been out with a forearm fracture since last month and is expected to return in October. Finally, Felix Torres will be out till the end of this month at least after getting a muscle injury towards the end of last month.
