Pachuca are the favorites going into their clash against Cruz Azul on Wednesday. The match will take place at Pachuca’s home ground, the Estadio Hidalgo. Pachuca have won only thrice in their last 10 home games.
However, Cruz Azul does not have a great away form either. The team has conceded two or more goals in six out of their last 10 away games. They have also lost both their away games in the new Apertura season against Tijuana and Atlas.
Both teams have struggled in the new Liga MX Apertura season. Neither team has managed to win a single game out of their total four games played so far. While Pachuca have managed to accumulate three points from three draws and one loss, Cruz Azul are in worse form, sitting at the bottom of the table with just one point from a draw against Santos.
The two teams are no strangers to playing each other, having faced off 30 times so far. The odds are slightly in favor of Pachuca for their 31st encounter, though they trail in the head-to-head. Cruz Azul dominated the head-to-head record against Pachuca with 13 victories and nine losses, while the remaining eight games ended in draws.
The last time Cruz Azul traveled to Pachuca in April 2023, they came back home with a comfortable 2-0 victory. However, both teams are struggling with form in recent times, and given their track record, Pachuca are favorites to seal the three points this time.
Pachuca should not expect a cakewalk heading into this tie. There has been no draws the last three times these two teams have played each other. During the past 10 matches, C.F. Pachuca have won three times. Cruz Azul have won five and the other two games ended in a draw. Despite the numbers, the odds are stacked strongly against Cruz Azul in this game owing to their poor form.
Pachuca have struggled with form since they lifted the 2022 Liga MX Apertura title. They managed to qualify for the finals, finishing 5th in the table. However, they were knocked out by Santos Laguna in the first knockout round 4-2 on penalties after the draw ended 4-4.
The total from their points of Apertura and Clausura last year saw Pachuca named the top seed from the Liga MX at the 2023 Leagues Cup. Clausura champions Tigres UANL had to go through the group stage in the Leagues Cup, but Pachuca were awarded a direct spot in the Round of 32.
However, their campaign was super short, with American side Houston Dynamo FC ousting them in a penalty shootout after the game ended 0-0 after regulation time. Pachuca played just one game in this year’s Leagues Cup, a disappointing run for coach Guillermo Almada as well as the club’s fans.
Pachuca have failed to win a single game in the new Liga MX Apertura 2023-24 campaign that began just before the 2023 Leagues Cup. Out of a total of four matches played, Los Tuzos have drawn against Queretaro, Universidad Nacional, and Mazatlan.
They were thrashed 4-0 by CONCACAF Champions League winners Club Leon in their very second match of the new season. Thus, they sit 14th out of 18 teams in the table, with just three points.
Pachuca has failed to win a single game in their last seven attempts. The reigning Apertura champions have done better than their Wednesday opponents in terms of accumulating points; however, neither team is better off right now.
They have struggled with a consistent goalscoring form, with Lucas di Yorio and Roberto de la Rosa each having scored just one goal so far. Pachuca has scored only three goals in the Apertura league so far, one in each of their draws. They failed to score in the Leagues Cup, with regulation time ending 0-0 and they also failed to score against Club Leon. Almada’s men will need to find a goalscoring opportunity to get past Cruz Azul and get back to winning ways. Despite a horrible form, Pachuca had the second-best attacking record in the Clausura 2022-23.
Cruz Azul will hope to prove all odds wrong and get back-to-back victories over Pachuca. The last time these two locked horns, Cruz Azul secured a 2-0 away victory. Joaquin Moreno will hope to repeat the feat to get his team back on track after a very poor run of form in recent times.
Moreno’s men have lost three of their four games in the Liga MX Apertura 2023-24 season so far. As a result, they sit at the bottom of the table with just one point out of a possible 12.
Moreno’s men recorded three back-to-back losses as the Apertura season opened. In the process, the team managed to score just one goal in three games. This will be a big worry for Cruz Azul. If they are to have any chance to steal points from Pachuca, they need to improve their goalscoring abilities.
Cruz Azul are averaging 0.8 goals per game this season, which will not be enough to beat Pachuca. On the other hand, they have conceded 2 goals per game, which stacks the odds firmly against them as they head into their fifth game of the season.
Cruz Azul have failed to win in their last six away encounters. They have beaten Pachuca away the last time these two sides met in April 2022. However, given their current away form, Pachuca have a definite advantage.
Uriel Antuna is the only Cruz Azul player to have bagged a goal and an assist this season. Moreno will have to create some magic if he is to have hope to beat Pachuca. The most common result of matches between CF Pachuca and Cruz Azul, when CF Pachuca is playing at home, is 1-0. 4 matches have ended with this result.
