Neither of these teams are in the best form, but one is playing at home and 12 points above the other on the Eastern Conference table. The New England Revolution are rightly the favorites for this match, and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to get their season back on track.
On the other hand, Inter Miami hasn’t got a new manager bounce after firing Phil Neville. Javier Morales, an assistant to Neville, has been in charge on an interim basis since Neville’s firing but couldn’t get the required response over the weekend against DC United.
Inter Miami offer very valuable odds for this match, which is a bit tempting considering New England’s recent form, but there was no uptick in performance following Neville’s sacking. The club doesn’t seem to have a clear strategy besides targeting big names from European football. Of course, they’ve added Lionel Messi to the team, who’ll certainly have an impact, but we’re not sure when he’ll start playing for the side.
The two sides haven’t faced each other on many occasions, as Inter Miami are fairly new to the league. In the six meetings between the sides, New England Revolution have come out on top thrice, and Inter Miami have come out on top twice.
This won’t be the only feature giving Inter Miami some encouragement heading into this tie; they also beat New England 2-1 last month. In fact, this was Inter Miami’s last league win and their fifth of the season.
It wasn’t the best of matches in terms of quality, but it had its fair share of dramatic moments. Inter Miami took the lead in the sixth minute thanks to a strike from David Antonio Ochoa Posas before Carles Gill leveled the scores in the 26th minute. Josef Martinez made it 2-1 to Inter Miami just before the half-time whistle, and the match was fairly cagey after that, but Posas got sent off in the 81st minute to make things interesting again.
In the end, Inter Miami held on to get all three points. They took seven shots to New England’s eight and had 42% of the possession; this game could’ve gone either way. Things haven’t looked great for Inter Miami since this game.
New England Revolution were a bit fortunate to draw 3-3 against Atlanta United last week. They only had 28% of the possession and took five shots all game to Atlanta United’s 20, but they were extremely clinical on the day. Carles Gill (1’) and Bobby Wood (37’) helped New England take the lead before Atlanta United showed their mettle in the second half.
Giorgos Giakoumakis led the comeback for Atlanta in the 56th minute before Thiago Almada leveled the scores in the 74th minute. It looked like Miguel Berry had scored the winner in the 87th minute, but Carles Gill scored late in stoppage to make it 3-3 and ensure New England left the game with a point.
It was an incredible game. The New England Revolution were really fortunate to get something at the end of the game.
Bobby Wood and Carles Gill aren’t likely to win the golden boot award this season, but their partnership has ensured that New England aren’t lacking a goal threat. Most teams in the MLS have one outstanding goalscorer, but that’s not the case at New England, where Bobby Wood and Carles Gill have scored five goals each.
The underlying numbers suggest that New England have been a bit unlucky in the goalscoring department, as they’ve got a high expected goals value of 24.4 and have scored 25 goals this season. Most teams tend to score around four to five goals more than their xG values, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if New England put a few goals past a side.
Inter Miami look like just the sort of opposition that could give New England the opportunity to up their goal difference.
Inter Miami were woeful in their 2-1 loss to DC United over the weekend. Kamal Miller’s seventh-minute red card put them on the back foot early in the game. They held on before Donovan Pines broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, and Christian Benteke cemented the three points with a goal in the 90th minute. Ian Fray scored a consolation goal for Inter Miami two minutes later, but it did nothing to uplift the mood at the club. However, there has been some news that will leave Inter Miami fans giddy.
It is no longer a rumor. Inter Miam’s social media account announced the signing of legendary soccer star Lionel Messi this week. This is not only the biggest scoop in Inter Miami’s history but also in MLS history.
Of course, the Argentine wouldn’t be the first soccer great to spend his latter years in the US. Brazilian legend Pele and Dutch great Johan Cruyff also spent some time playing soccer in the US. Pele was soccer’s first global superstar, and Cruyff was the sport's greatest teacher. The MLS wasn’t formed when the two greats played in the US, so Messi will certainly be the biggest name in MLS history if he joins Inter Miami. Other modern legends like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo, David Beckham, and Wayne Rooney have also plied their trade in the MLS, but Messi is a tier above all of them.
No team in the MLS needs his attributes more desperately than Inter Miami, which will add another layer of intrigue to the league. The David Beckham-owned franchise have been struggling all season, and this is far more than a little injection of energy. This would completely change the MLS on a broader scale and the trajectory of this season.
It’s only been six months since Messi scored two goals in the 2022 World Cup final. The Argentinian is still one of the best players in the world. Helping a struggling side get far into the tournament will only enhance his incredible legacy.
