Cleveland Cavaliers vs Toronto Raptors Predictions and Pick

Save for a match where the Raptors fielded four 10-day contract players, the Cavaliers have been pushed hard by Toronto in each of their wins. Toronto are a gritty team, but they don’t have the outside shooting to overcome Cleveland in the paint.

How Can the Cavaliers Beat the Raptors?

The Cleveland Cavaliers want to clear some space between themselves and the Raptors in the Eastern Conference standings. For them to do that, they need to control the energetic Raptors on the glass.

Only a middling rebounding team, ranking 15th in the league, the Cavaliers must stave off the energetic Raptors on the offensive glass. Toronto rank second in the league in offensive rebounds per game with 13.5, but their defensive rebounding, last in the league, opens up many second opportunities for Cleveland.

With Jarrett Allen unavailable, Evan Mobley has taken the lead in Cleveland’s front court to varying results. Still a rookie, Mobley can be inconsistent but his talent to control the boards is clear. It’ll be up to the Cavaliers’ supporting cast to make up the difference, if they hope to beat Toronto.

Cavaliers Key Player: (G) Darius Garland

The Cleveland Cavaliers will need some real scoring punch when hey face off against the Toronto Raptors, and the best place to get that is Darius Garland. The Cavaliers will hope that Garland can put in a similar performance against the Raptors.

In his last game, a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Garland posted 29 points and 17 assists in 40 minutes of play. He was excellent getting his teammates involved, which made up for his lacklustre, 2 of 8, shooting night from three.

Garland has had an excellent season, but the Toronto defence can be difficult to overcome. If he can continue to distribute the ball successfully, Garland’s offensive opportunities will be great.

How Can the Raptors Beat the Cavaliers?

The Toronto Raptors need this win against the Cleveland Cavaliers if they hope to leapfrog them in the playoff picture. While they’ve been carried by their starting unit in victories, the Raptors must find production in their bench to beat Cleveland.

Toronto only go about eight-men deep, with most of their bench production coming from Chris Boucher. In Toronto’s last game, a loss to the Chicago Bulls, the Raptors got 31 points from those who played more than 10 minutes off their bench.

Last in the NBA in bench scoring at 24.6 per game, the Raptors will need to find ways for their bench to step up their production. If they can’t, there isn’t enough firepower for Toronto to overcome Cleveland.

Raptors Key Player: (G) Fred VanVleet

The Toronto Raptors aren’t a deep team, so they need to rely on their starting unit to produce when they are on the court. Having struggled with injury throughout the season, VanVleet has seen a drop in efficiency that is not benefitting the team.

In his last game, a loss to the Chicago Bulls, VanVleet posted 19 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Unfortunately, the Raptors All-Star shot just 31.8% from the field and 25% from three on 12 attempts.

The Raptors need production from VanVleet if they want to take a win from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Always a solid defender, the offence-short Raptors need their All-Star point guard to produce in order to make up for their weak
