Detroit Pistons vs Orlando Magic Predictions and Picks

Despite this being a matchup between two of the worst teams in the NBA, that tends to make for a difficult to predict result. Given Orlando’s slightly higher defensive standards and offensive versatility, the Magic should come out the winner.

How can the Pistons beat the Magic?

The Detroit Pistons face an Orlando Magic side with a similar make up to their own. Young and energetic, the Pistons will have to overcome the length of the Magic defence in order to find victory.

While their defense isn’t the most consistent, the Magic can threaten with their length and tenacity. In victories, Orlando forces 14.1 turnovers while holding their opponents to just 41.7% from the field.

One of the most turnover-prone teams in the league with 14.3 per game, Detroit need to remain composed. If they can’t take care of the ball and allow too many extra opportunities, it’ll be another in the loss column.

Pistons Key Player: (F) Jerami Grant

The Detroit Pistons are a weak team, filled with young and inexperienced players. The one player who stands out in terms of ability and experience is forward Jerami Grant. When Detroit face the Magic, Grant will need to carry the load for them.

In his last game, a loss to the Miami Heat, Grant struggled from the field. while he was able to get to the line 8 times, Grant only shot 8 of 20 from the field and hit just 1 of his 5 three-point field goal attempts.

Grant is the type of player whose range is most deadly when he can get his scoring going in the paint first. Shooting just 34.4% from deep, despite making 2.1 threes per game over his last 10 games, Grant would do well to improve his efficiency.

How can the Magic beat the Pistons?

The Orlando Magic need to be ready for a fight when they take on the Detroit Pistons. Detroit are an energetic team who love to find second and third opportunities through their energy and effort alone.

The Detroit Pistons are just 29th in the NBA in rebounds per game with 31.9, but are 7th overall in offensive rebounds per game with 11.1. Detroit execute a rather inefficient offense, but it can work in their favor as their energy can find them opportunities off misses.

Unfortunately for Detroit, Orlando are an excellent defensive rebounding team. Ranking 10th in the league in defensive rebounds per game 44.0, the Magic must merely maintain their standards to not get outworked on the glass.

Magic Key Player: (G) Cole Anthony

The Orlando Magic have been having a dreadful season, but the emergence of Cole Anthony has been one of the few bright spots for them. Despite a blowout loss in their last game, Anthony still put up a solid performance.

Anthony led the way for the Magic in their last game, posting 19 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds in just 25 minutes of play. The game got out of hand early, but he was able to stay efficient going 5 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 from three-point range.

Cole Anthony’s willingness to get to the rim is a benefit to his team. Leading his team in free throw attempts per game, the more Anthony gets to the line the better chance his team has of winning.
