LAL: Time to Step Up

The Los Angeles Lakers have struggled with injuries, especially in the case of Anthony Davis. While the All-Star forward isn’t expected to play in Game 5, many are available to fill his role.

Big men Marc Gasol and Montrezl Harrell are the first to come to mind. Despite long runs of limited minutes, Gasol had a classic performance in Game 4 posting 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks in 23 minutes of play. Harrell was solid on the boards in limited minutes.

No single Lakers bench player will make up for what Davis provided, but as a group they are more than capable. They can’t win another game with just LeBron James putting in the work.

Lakers Key Player: (C) Andre Drummond

With the Lakers unlikely be able to field Anthony Davis, all eyes will be on Andre Drummond to live up to his starting role with the Lakers.

In Game 4 Drummond posted five points and ten rebounds in just under 20 minutes of play. He’ll likely play more in Game 5, and he’ll need to make a bigger impact.

Drummond, despite his size and strength, has been inconsistent in terms of his impact. How he defends the pick-and-roll and manages Ayton in the paint will determine the Lakers’ success.

PHO: The Suns Young Players Must Take Control

Despite the second-best record in the league this season, the Phoenix Suns are still being doubted. A large reason for their success has been the play of DeAndre Ayton and Devin Booker, two players who continue to make a winning impact.

In their last game against the Suns Booker and Ayton were a +12 on the evening. Booker didn’t shoot the ball particularly well and turned it over five times. Ayton had a 14 point, 17 rebound double-double to lead the game on the glass.

While young, the Suns key men are playing with a maturity that has flustered the Los Angeles Lakers. If they continue their play, even improving on efficiency in Booker’s case, they can get the edge in this series.

Suns Key Player: (G) Chris Paul

The Suns have a real opportunity to take control of this series and it all starts with Chris Paul. While he is struggling with injury at the moment, his ability and production is never in question.

Paul posted 18 points, nine assists, and three steals in 31 minutes of play in Game 4. Despite Monty Williams wanting to limit his minutes, Paul refused.

Without Davis manning the paint, the Suns can find even more through their pick-and-roll play. Paul’s leadership is invaluable for the Suns and his distribution drives their offence.
