SLO: Limit Three-Point Shots

Slovenia played a good game against France, as their offence was able to challenge even defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert. However, if Slovenia hope to win against Australia, they’ll need to do what they couldn’t against France and limit three-point shots.

In their semi-final loss to France, Slovenia allowed their opponents to hit 12 three-pointers on 25 attempts. Their two-point defense was better, where they only allowed the French to convert on 38% of their attempts.

If Slovenia want to take a medal home, they need to sort out their defensive issues. From their Olympic performances, the offensive end shouldn’t be a concern for them.

Slovenia Key Player: (C) Mike Tobey

Slovenia came up short in their semi-final matchup against France, but center Mike Tobey did his utmost to keep them competitive.

Tobey posted an impressive 23 points, eight rebounds, and two assists in his last game against France. He also did an excellent job against France’s Rudy Gobert, despite the loss.

With Baynes out of this matchup, Slovenia have the advantage in the paint. Tobey has been aggressive all tournament long. His production in the paint can quickly turn a game in Slovenia’s favor.

AUS: Maintain the Pace

The Olympic tournament is an exhausting process, which showed for Australia in their last game against the United States. After forfeiting their first half lead to the USA, Australia find themselves battling for Bronze.

After winning the first half against the United States, Australia lost the second half 55 to 33. The 20-plus points swing spelled their end, but also signalled their need to pace themselves through four-quarters.

Slovenia play at a high-tempo, with options from range and inside. Controlling the pace of the game is crucial to Australia’s success. If they can’t set the pace of the game early, Slovenia could run them right out of a medal.

Australia Key Player: (F) Joe Ingles

When Australia got off to their stellar start against the United States, it was Joe Ingles who powered their run. Whether shooting from range or creating for others, Ingles was fantastic. However he, and many others, lost their pace as the game wore on.

In 28 minutes of play, Ingles posted nine points, two rebounds, and two assists. Despite his strong first quarter, he struggled to get involved for the last three quarters of Australia’s semi-final matchup.

In their bronze medal game against Slovenia, he needs to stay aggressive in order to help the Boomers keep pace. If he struggles to stay involved, Australia may go home medal-less.
