Spread: Denver Nuggets -3.5 (-110)

The Denver Nuggets have gotten an excellent start for their NBA Championship defense. They’re 2-0 to open the season, with victories over Western Conference rivals in the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies. They enter this game against the Oklahoma City Thunder as the favorite of two undefeated teams.

Denver Nuggets found victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their last game - shorthanded as they were. Denver scored 108 points on 46.6% from the field. Despite losing the rebounding battle by eight, the Nuggets were able to force 20 turnovers out of their opponents.

Denver won in three out of four matches against the Oklahoma City Thunder last season. In victories, the Nuggets defeated the Thunder by an average of 6.0 points per game last year.

Nikola Jokic is in fine form to start the season, averaging 25.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game on 55.6% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range.

On the other hand, sharpshooter Michael Porter Jr. has struggled to open the season - averaging 10.5 points on 40.0% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range.

The Nuggets have looked excellent through two games, ranking seventh in efficiency (49.7% per game) and fourth in assists (28.0 per game). Despite allowing the sixth-most threes per game (10.0), they hold teams to 105.5 points per contest (8th overall).

While the Thunder are improved, the Nuggets are well-equipped to deal with the young Western Conference challengers.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander “to Score 30+ Points”: -110

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is rightly considered one of the brightest stars the NBA has on offer. The Thunder guard is one of the league’s most talented scorers, and he’s started the season with a bang. After a history-making FIBA World Cup run this past summer, Gilgeous-Alexander is set to take another jump in his career this season.

Through his first two games of the season, Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 32.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists.

He’s been willing to play off the ball more, resulting in higher efficiency given his 61.4% field goal and 57.1% three-point percentage. It’s still early to draw a full critique, but Gilgeous-Alexander’s three-point shooting rate through two games is something to be encouraged by, considering he’s shot below 36.0% from deep in his previous two seasons.

If there’s an area for concern, it’s his free throw shooting. Last year, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged a career-high 10.9 free throw attempts per game, with that number falling to 3.5 attempts through his first two games this season.

In four games against the Denver Nuggets last season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.5 points, 6.5 assists, and 4.8 rebounds on 54.9% from the field and 27.3% from deep.

Jamal Murray “3+ Made Threes”: -135

Jamal Murray, NBA Champion and co-captain of the Denver Nuggets, has started his 2023-24 campaign excellently. While Nikola Jokic takes the spotlight, Murray has been his usual self by playing as the team’s designated second option. If he can maintain the pace of his production, it’ll be his best season yet.

Through his first two games of the season, Murray is averaging 21.5 points and 5.5 assists per game while hitting 3.5 threes per contest.

He continues to excel in an off-ball role, converting on 50.0% efficiency from the field and three-point range. Murray has always been a gifted three-point shooter, converting at 36% or higher in five of his seven seasons.

With Michael Porter Jr. struggling to convert from three-point range, Murray has stepped up his play.

So far, the Thunder have held teams to an average of 27.6% from three-point range but have allowed 12.0 threes per game (15th of 30).

The Thunder will close hard on the Nuggets shooters, but that only leaves more opportunity for the savvy Murray to find his shot against his opponents' upstart young defenders. Set to maintain and surpass his 7.0 three-point attempts so far this season, hitting 3+ threes is undoubtedly in the cards.
