Tennessee vs FAU Prediction for the 2023 NCAA Tournament

#9 FAU Team Preview

FAU not only shocked the world by taking care of 8-seed Memphis in the first round, but they took down the Cinderella story FDU Knights in the second round. FAU is looking to push the pace of play, as evidenced by their two games, but they’ll face their biggest test against the Volunteers.

In their last game, FAU posted 78 points on 40.8% from the field and 29.0% from the three-point range. Their defense eventually won them the game, holding the Knights to 38.0% from the field and forcing them to commit 11 turnovers.

FAU hasn’t been the most prolific shooting team through this tournament, so they’ll need to find easy baskets if they hope to overcome Tennessee’s stellar defense.

Key Players & Key Stats

Sophomore guard Johnell Davis led the Owls in their second-round matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson. Davis’ production was impressive in the Owls’ second-round game, posting 29 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and five steals in 35 minutes of play. He more than made up for his teammates, who, save for Giancarlo Rosado, all failed to shoot above 50.0% for the game.

Sophomore guard Alijah Martin has been disappointing in FAU’s first two games. After shooting 23.1% from the field in their opening-round match, Martin shot 35.7% and posted 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists in 33 minutes against FDU. Martin must be productive and efficient from the field if the Owls hope to take down Tennessee and progress to the Elite Eight.

Tournament Path

  • Won East Region First Round 66-65 against #8 Memphis

  • Won East Region Second Round 70-78 against #16 Fairleigh Dickinson

#4 Tennessee Team Preview

Tennessee is one of the few schools left in this tournament that have met expectations. Their defense remains one of the toughest in the tournament, and their recent shooting form is encouraging - even if it only came from a few players.

The Volunteers controlled the Blue Devils in opportune moments in their last win. Leading by as much as 13 at one point, Tennessee did well to hold their opponents to just 42.9% from the field and 27.3% from three while forcing 15 turnovers.

After a close call in their first-round match, Tennessee’s defense is what will send them to the Elite Eight!

Key Players & Key Stats

Senior forward Olivier Nkamhoua led Tennessee in their 52-65 victory over Duke. Nkamhoua posted 27 points and five rebounds while shooting 10 of 13 from the field and converting on three of four three-point field goal attempts. His performance couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, as he matched his season-high in scoring while hitting a season-high in three-pointers.

Senior guard Santiago Vescovi was the other half of Tennessee’s sharpshooting duo against the Blue Devils, along with Nkamhoua. Vescovi posted 14 points, five assists, and five rebounds on just four of 11 from the field but four of eight from three-point range. His shooting helped break down the Blue Devils' defense and send the Volunteers to the Sweet Sixteen.

Tournament Path

  • Won East Region First Round 58-55 against #13 Louisiana

  • Won East Region Second Round 52-65 against #5 Duke

WSN’s Pick

Tennessee is the simple and correct pick for this matchup. The Volunteers have been impressive through this tournament, and their recent hot shooting run should concern the Owls. Expect the Volunteers’ defense, among the best in the nation, to send FAU packing.

Offensively, neither FAU nor Tennessee blow teams out of the water with their offense. FAU cleared 131.5 in their last game, but the Volunteers' defense should do enough to keep them under.

SEC & CUSA in the NCAA Tournament

While the SEC always has solid representation in the NCAA Tournament, CUSA is rarely represented and has inconsistent success. The Southeastern Conference has eight competitors in this year’s NCAA Tournament, while FAU is Conference USA’s only representative.
