One of the first and biggest games of the Tuesday slate of NHL games is set for a primetime matchup between the Detroit Red Wings (7-4-1) visiting the New York Rangers (8-2-1). This is a game that will help determine who will have the biggest lead in the power rankings from the Eastern Conference.

Detroit started the season with a 5-1 overall record that included the five-game-winning streak. They have since 1 only two of their last six games but have been stellar in their last three matchups. The Red Wings are coming off a huge 5-4 win at home versus the Boston Bruins.

It is no surprise to see the Rangers are among the top teams in the Eastern Conference thanks to the stellar play on the defensive side of the ice. After a 2-2 start to the season, the Rangers won six consecutive games. The Rangers are coming off their most disappointing performance of the season in the 5-4 road loss to the Minnesota Wild.

The Rangers will need their defense to step up as they take on a dangerous Red Wings offense that is sixth in the league in goals per game (3.75). Four players for the Red Wings have accounted for 10 or more points this season. Right-wing Alex DeBrincat has scored nine goals this season.

The Rangers are starting Jonathan Quick (94.8% on saves), who is the third-best goalie in the NHL in save percentage. They also possess incredible defenders and shot blockers that will make it difficult for any offense to score.

New York’s offense isn’t elite, but they do enough to keep up with some of the more efficient offenses in the league. Left-wing Artemi Panarin leads the team in points scored (18) and left-wing Chris Kreider leads the team with eight goals.

The closest matchup of the night in the Tuesday slate of NHL games is set between the Seattle Kraken (4-6-2) and the Arizona Coyotes (5-5-1). This is a game that will help boost productivity and push for more rhythm for either of these Western Conference teams moving forward.

The Kraken started the season slowly, especially on the defensive side of the ice. The Kraken are coming off of a tough 6-3 loss at home to the Calgary Flames but have won two big previous games at the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 and at home versus the Nashville Predators 4-2.

The Coyotes have been one of the more surprising teams in the NHL as their offense has been rejuvenated after a tough season last year. Arizona is 2-2 in their last four games, with their most recent game being a home loss to the Winnipeg Jets 5-3.

One big mismatch going into this game is the offense of Arizona versus the defense of Seattle. Seattle is giving up an average of 3.42 goals per game despite good play from their goalies Phillip Grubauer (90.2% on saves) and Joey Daccord (91.2% on saves). Arizona averaging 3.27 goals per game thanks to a great selection of scorers around the ice. The Coyotes have six players this season who have scored four goals due to the 61 total assists this season.

The orphans of the Kraken have not come alive at this point in the season either. They are averaging only 2.58 goals per game, while the defense of the Coyotes are playing better than projected from the start of the season.

New Jersey Devils vs. Colorado Avalanche

My Pick: New Jersey Devils (NJ)

One of the two big matchups of the night is set for a huge Eastern Conference versus Western Conference game between the New Jersey Devils (7-3-1) visiting the Colorado Avalanche (7-3). The Avalanche are coming into this game as slight favorites over the surprising Devils, who are among one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

New Jersey has won four of their last five games with their last game being a 4-2 win at the Chicago Blackhawks. The Devils were without star center Jack Hughes who suffered a significant shoulder injury in the previous 4-1 loss at the St. Louis Blues.

The Avalanche, while one of the most talented teams in the NHL, are on a serious scoring slump. They have only scored in one of their last four games, with that game being a 4-1 win over The Blues. Colorado's three losses are to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0, the Buffalo Sabres 4-0, and the Vegas Golden Knights 7-0.

The Avalanche will need to get their offense going as they are expected to be in a potential shootout even with the Devils not having Hughes. The Devils are averaging 3.91 goals per game, which is third in the NHL. While Hughes has been an essential force to the offense, it is forwards Jesper Bratt and Tyler Toffoli who are leading the team in goals (7). Forward Erik Haula is not far behind them with five goals.

The Avalanches’ saving grace in this game is their stellar defense as they're allowing only 2.80 goals per game. Colorado is projected to start Alexander Georgiev (89.9% on saves) against New Jersey.
