The Buffalo Sabres are not an overly aggressive scoring team as the Montreal Canadiens are. The Sabres have scored 12 goals in five games to start the season as opposed to 13 goals in four games from the Canadiens.
Buffalo is highly efficient in spreading the puck throughout the ice and setting up shots. This is an efficient game plan for an offense that doesn't have an alpha scorer.
What brings the edge to the Canadien's defense is their ability to consistently block shots. Montreal has accounted for 44 blocked shots with 13 of them coming from defender Mike Matheson. In four games played, Matheson has averaged 3.25 blocked shots per game.
The Sabres are still trying to find an identity on the offensive end of the glass. While the Montreals do not have an elite defense, they possess a reliable set of defenders they can trust to limit the Sabres' offense.

Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson is off to an incredibly slow start to the 2023-2024 NHL Season. Thompson has scored only one goal while not accounting for a single assist in five games played.
Last season for the Sabres, Thompson accounted for a career-high 94 points, 47 goals, and 47 assists. His first goal of the season came in last Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames.
The Canadiens may have a reliable defense thanks to several great defenders, but they will have a tough goalie setting with Sam Montebeault (89.2% on saves). There will be great opportunities for the Sabres to score, but it will have to come from Thompson.
