The Red Wings have won two of their last three games with their last win being a 5-4 win at home versus the Boston Bruins, who are arguably the best team in the NHL. After a six-game win streak, the Rangers accounted for their most disappointing defensive performance yet this season in the 5-4 loss on the road to the Minnesota Wild this past Saturday.
The Rangers came into the season with one of the best defensive units in the NHL and that continues well deep into the season. The Rangers are only allowing an average of 2.09 goals per game, which is the third-best in the league. This is due to their incredible combination of stout goalies and reliable role players, who are among the top shot blockers in the league. Jonathan Quick (94.8% on saves) is projected to start on Tuesday night against the Red Wings. Quick is the third-best goalkeeper in the league in save percentage.
The Red Wings’ offense is among one of the top offenses in the league as they average 3.75 goals per game. The Red Wings have four players who have accounted for at least 10 points this season and 12 games. Forward Alex DeBrincat leads the team in goals scored with nine while also accounting for 14 points. Center Dylan Larkin leads the team in points accounted (17) and assists (12).
Defensively, the Red Wings are in the middle of the league in goals allowed per game (3.08). They have allowed more than four goals a game once this season. They are coming off an impressive performance in their last game by holding the Boston Bruins to only four goals. Ville Husso (89.6% on saves) is set to start at goalie for the Red Wings on Tuesday night.
New York’s offense isn’t elite, but they do enough to keep up with some of the more efficient offenses in the league. The Rangers are averaging 3.09 goals per game this season. Left-wing Artemi Panarin leads the team in points scored (18) and left-wing Chris Kreider leads the team with eight goals.
