Based on the FIBA rankings, this should be a competitive game between No. 5 Canada and No. 7 France. However, the power rankings heading into the tournament have France at No. 2 behind the U.S. and No.
Williams led France during the qualifying tournament, averaging 16.3 ppg in roughly 20 minutes of play for a French team that averaged 88 ppg. However, the competition wasn't too tough, as France beat every team by 48, 32, and 55 points.
It is hard to know how good Canada's defense is since they held two teams to 55 and 60 points but let Japan score 86.
We think she'll play closer to 30 minutes in this game since France will need better players on the court to secure the win. If she plays 25+ minutes, we feel good about betting the OVER.

Until everyone plays one game and we see how much teams lean on their WNBA talent, we will lean toward them playing significant roles for their teams. Johannes played 16.8 minutes per game in the qualifying tournament but averaged 14 ppg.
Like Williams, she will see more time now that the games matter. We suspect Williams will lead France, but Johannes will still average around 14-16 ppg.

France did not allow more than 50 points in a qualifying game, but that could be due just as much to poor opponents as stellar defense. Alexander scored 17. 15 and 16 in Canada's qualifiers. She'll score more than 10.5 points against France.

We have a little concern for Carlton's OVER because of how she played during qualifying games. Yes, she scored 19 and 18 against Hungary and Japan, but then she only scored five against Spain. Did she go 1-13 from the floor because the Spanish defense was that good, or did she simply have a bad day?
Anyone can have a bad day; there is no way to predict those. Based on what we have seen from her, she'll score well over 12.5 points.

It's easy (and logical) to assume that Team USA will dominate the game against Japan. The U.S. has a bigger, more physical team that should be able to score in the paint at will. When Japan tries to adjust its defense accordingly, Sabrina Ionescu, Kelsey Plum, and Diana Taurasi will make it rain from the three-point line.
So, bettors will need to answer a couple of questions before putting money down: (1) will the U.S. let off the gas once the game is well in hand and let Japan's players score in garbage time, and (2) how much will the starting five play for the U.S., and how much time will the bench get.
From what little we have seen from Wilson in pre-Olympic action, the under may be the better bet. After all, she only scored 19 points against Germany and was inactive during the qualifiers. But if you follow the WNBA even a little bit, then you know she can take over a game at will.
The only question is whether she'll see the court enough to score 20.5+ points.
She played 25 minutes vs. Germany, but in the Olympic opener in the Tokyo Games, she played close to 28 minutes (but only scored 19). We can see the starting five possibly playing more to help them work on their continuity. If that is the case, Wilson will clear 20.5 points.

Her scoring has been a bit sporadic during the season. Still, with the size advantage the U.S. has versus Japan, it would not be shocking to see the U.S. abuse Japan's smaller players by pounding Britney Griner, Napheesa Collier, and Thomas down their throats all day.
Thomas will likely be third in line for playing time with that trio, but she'll see the court enough to score four baskets.

Yamamoto was Japan's leading scorer during qualifiers and in their bracket, with 17 ppg. She is an essential piece of the puzzle for Japan and will likely play 30+ minutes as she did in each qualifier. Given the time, she'll score ten points.
Of course, against the U.S. defense, that may not matter. But even if the U.S. does dominate the game, there is always garbage time.

Hayashi will see the court enough to have the opportunity to score 12+ points, but don't count on her doing so. Her scoring was somewhat erratic during qualifiers. Yes, she had a solid game vs. Spain (20 points), but she also had 11 points in one game and just four in another.
The U.S. defense may not let anyone from Japan's roster score in double digits.
