ESPN college basketball Saturday is loaded this week, as it’s the final weekend before March Madness begins. The Big 12 and Pac 12 will be two of the conferences with strong representation in the NCAA Tournament, so you’re not going to want to miss Kansas vs Texas or Arizona vs UCLA.
Kansas will travel to Austin as the third-ranked team in the land to face the ninth-ranked Longhorns. This matchup is critical for seeding and it could be one where we see a rematch in the NCAA Tournament. Even though the Jayhawks are ranked higher than the Longhorns, our initial lean is toward Texas.
It has been difficult for teams to win on the road in the Big 12. The conference is widely regarded as the best CBB group in the country, and the home-court advantage is real. Kansas has been one of the best teams in America at winning on the road, but the issue is that the Longhorns are elite at home.
Texas has posted a 16-1 home record this season and were only beaten by eight on the road at Kansas a few weeks ago. The Longhorns can play with the Jayhawks behind star guard Marcus Carr. If Texas can utilize strong perimeter defense, they will prevail on Saturday.
The nightcap for college basketball on ESPN will showcase #4 UCLA Bruins against #8 Arizona. These teams are polar opposites as the Wildcats win with scoring and the Bruins dominate their opponents with defense. The more well-rounded team is UCLA, who is still scoring close to 74 points per game.
Arizona’s defense will be the reason they struggle to get anything going on the road. At this point in the year, defense is critical and the Wildcats don’t play with the same intensity as the Bruins in the backcourt. This intensity should be magnified on Sunday as UCLA will be looking to avenge their 58-52 loss on the road to Arizona earlier in the year. Look for Bruins guard, Jaime Jaquez Jr., to be much better on Saturday than he was in his first game against the Wildcats. For this reason, we recommend laying the points for the home team.
