This weekend, the California State Athletic Commission paved the way for an interesting professional boxing card from the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California. Promoter Ryan Kavanaugh of Triller Promotions made headlines when setting up the comeback of Oscar de la Hoya, who was scheduled to fight Vitor Belfort. At the same time, Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz were included in the program. Many lifelong boxing fans viewed the show as another slap in the face after seeing the likes of Jake Paul, Mike Tyson, and Conor McGregor appear in the squared circle.
Fight fans who were opposed to the de la Hoya comeback may be pleased to learn it has since been shelved following a COVID-19 outbreak, but there’s one bout the traditionalists have been looking forward to. American Andy Vences meets Ireland’s Jono Carroll over ten rounds in the super featherweight division. This is about that has captured the imagination and is seen as a crossroads fight in both men’s careers. Victory would catapult them up the rankings and towards the big fights of the division, while defeat would leave one considering their future, forced back to the drawing board.
This bout will be an important part of a card attended by thousands of fans as the sport continues to battle back from the effects and damages inflicted by the coronavirus emergency and the resulting lockdowns. Millions more will follow the action live on television with viewers in the US, Ireland, UK, Mexico, and further afield. The pressure is on both Vences and Carroll to live up to the hype and deliver a thrilling contest, and the gladiators are expected to do that. This has all the ingredients of a classic.
The competitiveness of this contest makes it incredibly appealing to online bettors, with wagers coming in support of both fighters. Traders at all major gambling apps have had their say on how they expect the contest to go, offering odds on the fight winner. There’s also a wide range of specials available, including the method of victory. This market challenges punters to predict the winner of the contest and how they will achieve it – on a points verdict or by knockout. It’s trickier to get this one correct, but the odds are worth shooting for.
Some of the other specials on offer at the top bookies include round betting, round group betting, and to be knocked down. In the round betting, you are predicting an exact round the fight will be won in and for which fighter, such as Carroll, in round three. You give yourself a bit of a safety net with round group betting by picking a few rounds and grouping them together. This could be Vences in rounds 1-3. This increases your chances of landing a winner, but the odds for the exact round are higher than the round groups.
Below you’ll find a table with the fight winner odds covered, as well as the price for the draw. The quotes are correct at the time of writing but are subject to change. There will also be in-fight betting available, with the odds updated throughout to reflect the flow of the fight.
As can be seen from the fighter winner betting odds, this is a 50/50 in both the betting and ability of both fighters. Fans of boxing love these types of fights, but they don’t come around too often, and when they do, it’s usually for world titles or major belts. It’s commendable for both Carroll and Vences to put their careers on the line and take such a gamble.
The fact that neither fighter has an unbeaten record makes that a little easier to do, which is also refreshing to see. Many modern boxers, inspired by the likes of Floyd Mayweather, seek to build and then protect an unblemished record. This usually results in them fighting opponents a level or two below them, and that makes for boring fights. Jono and Andy are happy to stick their necks on the line in an attempt to make a name for themselves.
Vences is a great fighter who has taken to boxing better than most expected him to, but it’s Carroll who has the better boxing pedigree and background. He worked his way through the amateurs, and although his professional career hasn’t gone as well as many expected it to, he has already proven himself to be a great fighter. Carroll’s experience will be enough to see him grind out a win, but it won’t be easy, and he’ll be made to work. A points win looks like the smart bet here with Vences never being stopped and Carroll bringing a lowly 22% KO average into the bout.
Vences will come to win and look for the knockout, but the longer this bout goes, the better it will be for Carroll. He’ll aim to steer clear of danger during the early rounds and build up a lead on the scorecards. Vences should then become desperate, and Jono’s work will get easier from there. The scorers sat at ringside will be looking for the cleaner shots landed, and that will favor the Irishman over his opponent, who is expected to force the pace and aim to get his big shots off.
