The top fight this Saturday night, May 20th is set to be a fight for the ages, literally and metaphorically.
The lightweight battle in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, will feature Devin Haney (29-0; 15 KOs) and Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-2; 11 KOs) with the lightweight title on the line. There is a significant age between these two tenacious boxers as Haney is 24 years old while Lomachenko is 35 years old. Haney has not been in the ring in front of a crowd since his 12-round win by decision over George Kabosos Jr. on October 16th, 2022.
The last six fights for Haney have all been won by unanimous decision. The last time that a match ended early was in four rounds by corner retirement over Zaur Abdullaev on September 13th, 2019.
There has been a clear shift in the fighting style of Haney. Early in his pro career, Haney was getting knockouts and TKOs, but now is conditioned enough to last all 12 rounds consistently.
For Lomachenko, he is looking to show that he has plenty left in the tank to be considered one of the top lightweight fighters in the world.
The last time Lomachenko stepped in the ring, was on October 29th, 2022 in a 12-round decision win over Jamaine Ortiz. It was his third fight since the tough 12-round loss by decision to Teofimo Lopez on October 17th, 2020 for the IBF lightweight title.
Since then, Lomachenko seemed like he was written off among the top of the world’s best boxers, he is looking to change people’s perspectives permanently.

This is a fight that was set to be established three years ago. Both boxers are among the top lightweight fighters in the world due to their quick, alert, and surprisingly powerful fighting styles. This fight will be a slow match which should make Haney the favorite going into Saturday, not only because of his age but also his explosive production.
There are several odds to place bets for this fight, but the easiest, and perhaps safest bet is Haney winning by decision.
As mentioned before, if this fight between Haney and Lomachenko was set three years ago, this would be an event with the closest odds. Time is currently not on the side of Lomachenko as he is not only 25 years old, but 11 years older than Haney. Age is the biggest factor in the decline of great fighters.
Lomachenko, however, is showing that he is not slowing down, as he is still agile, fast, and athletic. He is a fighter that can move around quickly and go for close effective close combat shots. He is comforting being close distance and taking critical jabs to the opposing fighter’s head.
For Haney, there is a reason why he has not suffered a loss in his professional boxing career. Haney is a calm, reactive, and smart fighter who has a special talent for developing a rhythm in his punches. He can land efficient jabs, especially to the head. He is not a ruthless boxer that will go for the multiple barrages of punches.
One of the more underrated aspects of his skills that will certainly play a factor against Lomachenko is the body shots he inflicts on his opponents. There have been several fights in his early professional career where he will deal serious damage to his opponent in the middle-range section of their body, where they are not protected.
With Lomachenko being a fighter that likes to close in for solid head jabs, Haney can maneuver into a position where he could very well knockout him out. Of all the opportunities for a knockout from either fighter, Haney’s powerful and efficient body jabs are certainly one to be watchful of.
