Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans have locked horns once previously, where Hardik Pandya’s team emerged as winners, courtesy of a sensational knock of 94 runs from David Miller.
Given the enormous gulf in current form and momentum between the two sides, which the league standings transparently depict, we have predicted the Titans to win this fixture and remain at the top of the ladder.
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, C Hari Nishant, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Dwaine Pretorius, Dwayne Bravo, Maheesh Theekshana, Simarjeet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary
Gujarat Titans: Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Shubman Gill, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Hardik Pandya (c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Alzarri Joseph, Yash Dayal, Mohammed Shami.
Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans will cross paths in the 62nd match of the 2022 Indian Premier League Season at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, 15th March.
On Thursday, Chennai Super Kings became the second team to get eliminated from the playoffs race after suffering a morale-drenching defeat against the basement boys, Mumbai Indians.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men have won only four of the 12 matches that they have contested so far, and will now be looking to play the last two fixtures with freedom and renewed zeal as they look to escape the dreaded wooden spoon, that is, finishing in the last position.
The mood will be very different in the Gujarat Titans’ camp as they were the first team to confirm their berth in the IPL 2022 playoffs. Hardik Pandya’s team has had a fantastic campaign so far, having won nine of their 12 matches.
The Titans are coming into this match on the back of a 62-run victory against a star-studded Lucknow Super Giants lineup, and quite understandably, every player who dons blue in this fixture will be buzzing with confidence.
Given that the monkey is off their backs and there is no pressure of staying alive in the playoffs race anymore, Chennai Super Kings could make a few changes in this game. After scoring only one run in the previous fixture, Robin Uthappa might have to make way for talented top-order batter C Hari Nishaant, while Dwaine Pretorius can be given another opportunity at the expense of Moeen Ali.
It has escaped scrutiny and criticism owing to their favourable run of form, but it is incomprehensible how Rahmanullah Gurbaz has not made his debut for the side yet, especially when Matthew Wade has not got going at all. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed for only 10 runs in the last match, and in this fixture, he might finally have to make way for the Afghan youngster.
Devon Conway: Chennai Super Kings will go back to the drawing board following the conclusion of this season and will aim to start afresh, as there are not too many positives to take, except perhaps Devon Conway’s form. The New Zealand batter has scored 231 runs in only the five matches that he has played, which includes three half-centuries.
Hardik Pandya: A captain might be as good as his team, in Gujarat Titans’ case, it seems that the team is trying to match the performance level of their inspirational skipper, Hardik Pandya. Many were skeptical regarding his ability to lead a team, but the Indian all-rounder has answered each and every one of his critics by delivering one match-winning performance after another.
Pandya has scored 344 runs at an average of 38.22 and a strike rate of 131.80, whilst with the ball, he has picked up four wickets at an economy rate of 7.58 runs per over.
