Club America vs Club Tijuana Predictions and Picks

Club Tijuana are in a freefall.

With another season that featured significant roster turnover, Tijuana have looked unmethodical and disorderly as they’ve started the 2021 Apertura without a win.

Manager Robert Dante Siboldi has appeared disheartened on the sidelines — especially in their two latest draws in which they’ve fallen apart after scoring the first goal.

And despite all of this mess, the argument could be made that their biggest test of the tournament so far will be on Sunday when they visit Club America.

In all competitions, America have five consecutive wins in a row.

Led by former Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari, the Mexico City giants haven’t lost a match since May.

Tijuana won’t have much of a chance here.

It doesn’t take too much research to see the vast difference between America and Tijuana.

A few weeks after the start of the season, America waltzed out of Week 5 at the top of the Liga MX standings while Tijuana stumbled out at 16th (third-to-last).

While Tijuana have yet to claim a victory, America have yet to earn a loss as they’ve powered their way through with four wins and one draw.

A number of players — and Solari — are to thank for this incredible start to the Apertura, but there is one player in particular who has stood out…

America’s Salvador Reyes Could Be The Liga MX Signing Of The Season

After making a name for himself with Puebla in the last two years, there was plenty of excitement when America brought in promising left-back Salvador Reyes into the fold this summer.

What wasn’t expected though was how quickly he would adjust to his new surroundings.

Since making his debut in July, the 23-year-old defender has been mesmerizing with his two goals and three assists in his last four Liga MX matches.

On his debut in July, he was also inches away from scoring a golazo from distance.

Pacey, clever and also with a good eye for shot-taking, Reyes is already looking like the signing of the season so far.

Credit to America for spotting and incorporating the young fullback.

Chance Creation For Tijuana Has Become Stagnant

Match after match, Tijuana have been dismal in the final third.

With an xG (expected goals) tally of 4.9 — in comparison to America’s xG of 7.54 — Tijuana are below the league average and 11 other Liga MX teams.

You don’t need overcomplicated numbers to quantify this either.

When watching Tijuana, they regularly take desperate shots that regularly trouble goalkeepers.

In an almost frantic manner, the bordertown club constantly launch inaccurate or low quality opportunities that have only led them to four goals in five matches.

Attacking Statistics Have Been Superb For America

As for America, Solari’s system is an efficient and almost effortless one.

They have the third-highest xG in the league, they’ve scored seven goals in five appearances, and most importantly, they already have three players who have scored more than once.

America have options in their frontline, and whether it be Roger Martinez, Alvaro Fidalgo, Henry Martin, Sebastian Cordova or even Reyes with his high-pressing runs, Solari can rely on a number of figures to score.

Speaking of which, keep an eye on Martin — since returning from the Olympics, the striker is due for a big performance for America.
