Inter vs. River Plate Pick

Go for River Plate or a draw. Inter are not at the peak of their powers, so this one should go River’s way.

Inter Struggling to Bounce Back from Champions League Defeat

Inter players probably still wish they were on vacation right now. After a painful 2024/25 in which the Italian giants finished as runners-up in both Serie A and the Champions League, Inter were clearly emotionally and physically drained. Yet they have had to pick themselves up for the Club World Cup.

Simone Inzaghi left the club after the Champions League final, to be replaced by Christian Chivu. He has had an unconvincing start to his tenure. Inter drew 1-1 with Mexican outfit Monterrey first up, before needing a last-gasp winner to beat Urawa Red Diamonds on matchday two.

A draw against River Plate would be sufficient to send Inter through to the next round, but the job is not done yet.

River Plate Only Need a Draw to Advance as the Group Winners

Thanks to a marginally better goal difference than Inter, River Plate sit at the summit of the standings in Group E ahead of the final set of games. That means a draw here would not only send them through; it would crown them as group winners.

Needless to say, River will be happy with that. They have not been perfect up to now, beating Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 before being held to a goalless draw by Monterrey, but Marcelo Gallardo’s men are just one positive result away from advancing to the round of 16.

“It was hard for Inter to win, it was hard for Monterrey too, so for our third game we're going to go with the best we have and we're going to be optimistic,” Gallardo said ahead of this clash.

Inter Not at Best Lately and River Plate Can Take Advantage

Inter are still finding their feet under Chivu and there are still signs of fatigue in their play after a gruelling season back in Europe.

River Plate are not currently among the very best teams South America has to offer, but they have shown themselves to be competitive in this group.

River will want to claim a major scalp by beating a European heavyweight like Inter. At the very least, we like their chances of avoiding defeat.
