Best MLB Bets Today: Expect Plenty of Fireworks in Houston Tonight
We have a couple of bets from two very different games today. The first comes from a good pitching matchup between the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians. After that, we’re turning to an AL West showdown as the Los Angeles Angels take on the Houston Astros with struggling starters on the mound.

Best MLB Bets Today: Mets vs. Guardians (1:10 PM EST)
Guardians ML (-126 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
While we are only two months into the season, it sure feels like New York has started to pack things in. They continue to plummet down the NL standings after losing eight of their previous 11 games. Trade rumors and negative media coverage continue to swirl around the team, making it hard to believe they can right the ship. Given that they will be facing one of the hottest teams in baseball with a very good pitcher on the mound, we are happy to give up the 1.5 runs this afternoon.
Cleveland will have Triston McKenzie (2-3, 3.23 ERA) starting against the Mets today. The 26-year-old broke out in 2022 but missed almost all of 2023 with injury. He started this season with some tough starts but returned to his 2022 form in May, posting a 1.78 ERA across four starts. While walks remain an issue for the young righty, the Mets lineup ranks in the league's bottom half in walks.
The Mets will have a veteran on the mound today in Jose Quintana (1-4, 5.21 ERA). The 35-year-old hasn’t been great in 2024, as it appears his impressive career is on its final leg. Quintana did start things off well with a 3.41 ERA in April, but he has a 9.69 ERA across three starts in May. While he was a bit better against the Phillies in his last start, he only lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs. Given that the Guardians have been swinging the bat as well as anyone in the league over the last week, we see them doing a lot of damage against the aging Quintana today.

Best MLB Bets Today: Angels vs. Astros (2:10 PM EST)
Over 9 (-102 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
This matchup is going to provide some major fireworks in Houston tonight. One reason for that is the Astros' recent play, who have gotten red hot after a brutal start to the season. While their starting rotation is still a work in progress, their offense has been tearing the cover off the ball even more than usual. It has led to them winning six of their seven games last week. Given the starter on the mound for the Angels’ tonight, we expect that streak to continue.
LA will have 34-year-old Tyler Anderson (4-4, 2.72 ERA) on the mound tonight. While his ERA is impressive, it has steadily risen over his last five starts. While he has been solid through three May starts (3.60), he will be facing a hot Astros offense that has crushed him in the past. Houston owns a .381 batting average and a .778 slugging percentage against Anderson. Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, and Alex Bregman are a combined 12-30 against Anderson.
The Astros will have Hunter Brown (1-4, 7.71 ERA) making the start this afternoon. While the young pitcher has been a bit better in May (4.40 ERA), he was shelled by the Brewers in his last start. His control was once again the problem, walking three batters and allowing four hits and four runs across five innings. That has pushed his WHIP up to 1.93 and has us expecting an average Angels offense to hit him hard.
