With the return of baseball comes the return of afternoon games. A blessing from the sport as it helps distract us during our mid-day lulls, as well as gives us exciting baseball action all the way into the night. To make watching daytime baseball even better, we can potentially make some money early into the action by betting on a YRFI. This installment of our daily YRFI piece focuses on one afternoon game, as well as an evening matchup for all-day YRFI action.
As for where to wager on a YRFI, FanDuel Sportsbook has been the pioneer for the YRFI market. FanDuel routinely puts out lines before anyone else, as well as providing some of the better odds in the market. To make your experience even better for those who have not signed up yet, FanDuel is giving new users $200 in bonus bets for just simply signing up and winning an initial wager of at least $5. It has been a rough 2024 for Patrick Sandoval, mightily struggling during spring training while also starting the regular season with an ERA of 16.20 and a WHIP of 4.800. In just 1.2 innings pitched, Sandoval was hit six times, walked two batters, and had three earned runs against him.
While an ERA of 16.20 is certainly due to a positive regress back toward the mean for an experienced pitcher, his streak of poor play this year has been eye-opening. It started with his spring training outings, finishing the preseason with an ERA of 7.15 and a WHIP of 1.941. That was a result of getting hit against 16 times, walking six batters, and allowing nine earned runs.
Sandoval now goes against a dangerous Marlins top-heavy batting lineup, especially with Luis Arraez kicking things off as one of the best contact hitters in the league. Arraez was on pace to lead the league in hits last season, falling just short after having to take some time off due to an injury. Should Arraez take advantage of a spiraling Sandoval from the jump, then that puts the Marlins in a great position to score one early.
On the other side, the Marlins roll out AJ Puk who has been the definition of a roller coaster in production so far in 2024. Puk started out the year hot with a dominant preseason, finishing spring training with an ERA of 1.32 and a WHIP of 1.171. He struck out 23 batters in four games played while only allowing 12 hits and 2 earned runs against.
That same level of production mightily failed to roll over into the regular season as he drastically underwhelmed in his season debut. Puk finished his outing with an ERA of 18.00 and a WHIP of 4.500. He was shelled from the start, only lasting two innings before getting pulled after allowing three hits and six walks for four earned runs against. Fade his lack of command until he proves to be back in spring training form.

Moving on to the evening slate, both Zack Thompson and Joe Musgrove bring some intrigue for another YRFI as both pitchers struggled in their regular season debuts. Like AJ Puk, Thompson has also been a roller coaster in production as he looked respectable in spring training before faltering in the regular season.
Zack Thompson finished the preseason with an ERA of 2.81 and a WHIP of 1.063, yet his regular season ERA dipped to 8.44 and WHIP down to 1.500. His drop-off in production stems from his aggressiveness of hanging the ball in the strike zone, surrendering three home runs, five total hits, and five earned runs against.
As for who he is dueling against, Joe Musgrove for the Padres has been in a world of hurt since the calendar flipped to 2024. Musgrove finished spring training with a disastrously low ERA of 13.50 and has started the regular season with an ERA of 9.72. Opposing batters had no issue making contact against him, connecting 15 times for nine earned runs. Continue to fade both pitchers, even with two batting lineups that look underwhelming on paper.
