Vancouver Whitecaps and Real Salt Lake have lost just once each in their last five matches, but the away side are the favorites to win this weekend. They have won seven games this season, while the home side has lost seven times.
Vancouver Whitecaps are slowly pushing up the table and have moved from the bottom of the Supporters’ Shield standings to 25th – 4 places up – in their last five matches. They have picked up 10 points from those matches and are looking to keep their good run going.
Real Salt Lake are aiming to go 2nd in the table with a win this weekend as none of the other sides are playing due to the international break. They have won four of their last five matches, with the only loss coming to Nashville SC.
These two sides have played out some interesting matches, with the last draw between them coming in 2014. Since then, they have played 17 games, and Vancouver has won 10 times.
In the last five meetings, Vancouver have won thrice, while Real Salt Lake have won twice. The previous three meetings have seen 4+ goals scored in the games, and we could see a repeat of that this weekend.
Vancouver Whitecaps had made one of the worst starts to the season of any team in the league. They won just one of their first eight games, but are now slowly getting into form.
They started the season at Columbus Crew and were thrashed 4-0 on the opening weekend. Jakob Nerwiński got himself sent off as well for the away side, while Lucas Zelarayán, Luis Díaz, Derrick Etienne Junior, and Miguel Berry scored for the home team to seal a comfortable win. They followed it up by holding defending champions New York City FC to a goalless draw in their first home game of the season.
Houston Dynamo gave them hope with some sloppy defending and conceding first. Lucas Cavallini scored in the 14th minute, but Whitecaps could not keep the lead for 20 minutes. Darwin Quintero equalized in the 33rd minute and then went on to make it 2-1 early in the second half. The Canadian side had no response, and the match ended in a defeat.
LAFC made things worse for the Vancouver side as they were beaten 3-1 in the next game week. Ryan Hollingshead scored twice while Carlos Vela got the other as Vancouver let slip of another lead after Tristan Blackmon scored the first goal of the game.
The Whitecap’s hunt for a win finally came to an end after Ryan Raposo scored the lone goal of the game against Sporting Kansas City. They did not dominate possession but managed 12 shots and defended well to get the three points.
However, the loss did not help them turn a corner as they ended up losing to Portland Timbers, CF Montreal, and Austin FC in their next three matches. They bounced back with a 1-0 win over Toronto and then picked up another point when they faced San Jose Earthquakes in mid-April.
The last three matches in the league have been good for Vancouver as they have won twice and lost once. They picked up a 2-1 win over FC Dallas at home after Lucas Cavallini scored in the 92nd minute. They were 1-0 down at halftime as Paul Arriola scored in the final minute of injury time, but a goal from Brian White put them level in the 71st minute.
They could not repeat the magic against Charlotte FC as it was the exact opposite this time around. They took the lead in the 2nd minute via Tosaint Ricketts but failed to hold on to it for long. The newcomers equalized just 6 minutes later via Andre Shinyashiki and then scored the winner in the 85th minute to seal the win. Daniel Rios got the late goal just 2 minutes after coming on, and Charlotte managed to defend well and collect all three points. Vancouver picked up another win over Sporting Kansas City, once again by a single goal. Lucas Cavallini scored from the spot in the first half, and that goal was enough to separate the two sides, who have been struggling this season.
Ryan Gauld and Brian White are doubtful, while Adrian Cubas, Russell Teibert, Thomas Hasal, and Tristan Blackmon are ruled out.

Real Salt Lake have been decent since the start of the season, and apart from the three losses, they have been doing well in most games. They kicked off their season with a goalless draw at Houston Dynamo and then edged out a 1-0 win over Seatle Sounders in their first home game. Bobby Wood scored the lone goal of the game early in the second half, but Real could not do more with their dominance.
They followed it up with a win over New England Revolution and Nashville SC but then had a poor run. They lost 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City and then drew with Colorado Rapids and Toronto FC. Making things worse for them were defending champions New York City FC, who thrashed them 6-0.
Real Salt Lake have been far from perfect in their last 5 matches but have got the results. They got a smash-and-grab win over LA Galaxy at home after being dominated throughout the game. Despite having just 36% possession, Marcelo Silva’s goal early in the second half was enough to get them the three points.
They could not do much in the match at Nashville SC and ended up losing 2-0. Dave Romney scored after the hour mark, and Charles Sapong sealed the win in the 92nd minute. They needed another late goal to pick up the win against Austin FC in mid-April. Alexander Ring gave the away side an early lead, but Daniel Pereira Gil’s red card turned the game. Maikel Chang and Andrew Brody sealed the win in the second half.
Djordje Mihailovic scored in the very first minute for CF Montreal, but Real Salt Lake managed to fight back and get the three points. Justen Glad and Sergio Córdova scored in the second half to give Real another close win.
Pablo Mastroeni’s men finally put on a dominating performance when they faced Houston Dynamo last week. Bobby Wood, Sergio Córdova and Justen Glad got on the score sheet to seal a comfortable 3-0 win.
Erik Holt and Jasper Löffelsend are doubtful, while Damir Kreilach, Zack Farnsworth, Jonathan Diego Menendez, and Bret Halsey are ruled out.
