The NASCAR Xfinity Series continues the road course leg of its schedule with a visit to Mid-Ohio.
It will be a standalone event for Xfinity, as both the Cup and Truck Series will be at Michigan.
While no Cup Series drivers will take part in the race, there are some strong one-off entries.
Three of the race’s six editions, in fact, were won by part-time drivers.
Sam Hornish Jr. was the last one to do so, scoring a dominant victory from pole in 2017.
Three past winners are set to take the green flag this year.

Fresh off his first career Xfinity Series win, Austin Cindric is the early favorite heading into Mid-Ohio.
The Team Penske driver came on top of a heated last lap fight at Watkins Glen.
Cindric comes from a road course racing background.
His four career wins in NASCAR have all come at road courses.
Cindric came close to pulling it off at Mid-Ohio last year as well.
He started the race from the pole and led the most laps, finishing second.
The Team Penske driver has now qualified for the playoffs.
Cindric is fifth in points with seven top 5 and 14 top 10 finishes in 20 starts.

A.J. Allmendinger is one of the previous Mid-Ohio winners taking part in this year’s race.
The veteran finished second to Cindric at Watkins Glen, losing the lead on the final lap.
Despite having retired from full-time competition, Dinger remains competitive.
He finished third on the road at Daytona in his other start but got disqualified for a technical infringement.
Allmendinger won at Mid-Ohio in 2013 driving part-time for Team Penske.
An open-wheel convert, the veteran has made good use of his experience with road courses.
His only Cup Series victory came at Watkins Glen in 2016.

Justin Allgaier is the defending race winner at Mid-Ohio.
The JR Motorsports driver finished a strong fourth last weekend at The Glen despite an early crash.
He led 13 laps and ran among the contenders for the entire race.
Allgaier has three wins at road courses, including two last year.
The Xfinity veteran, however, is still chasing his first victory of 2019 after scoring a career-high five last season.
He is fourth in points with nine top 5 and 13 top 10 finishes in 21 races.

Christopher Bell had a strong race at The Glen, finishing a surprising third.
It was a career-best result for the Joe Gibbs driver at a road course.
Bell ran with the leaders for most of the day, but a half-spin during the final restart cost him a shot at victory.
Nonetheless, it showed that he has plenty of pace outside of ovals.
Bell is second in points, and his five wins are tied for the series’ lead.

Cole Custer survived a hectic weekend at The Glen to finish eighth.
The Stewart-Haas driver is arguably the strongest road course racer among Xfinity’s “Big Three”.
Custer finished all four road course races inside the top 10 last season, with two top 5 results.
He came from the back of the field on a spare car at Watkins Glen following a crash during practice.
The Stewart-Haas driver is third in points, and also has five wins in 2019.

Regan Smith is the third previous winner at Mid-Ohio joining the grid for this year’s race.
It will be his first NASCAR start in nearly ten months, and his first Xfinity start in two years.
Smith’s last Xfinity start also came at Mid-Ohio, a DNF in 2017.
Having retired from full-time competition, Smith will have some catching up to do.
Even so, it probably won’t stop him from fighting for the win.
Smith won at Mid-Ohio in 2015 and finished second the year before.
He will be back with JR Motorsports, the same team he took to victory lane four years ago.
The former Cup Series driver has six career wins in the Xfinity Series.

Justin Haley once again showed his road course skills at Watkins Glen.
The rookie ran among the contenders for most of the afternoon, but a late crash took him out of contention.
Haley finished fourth in stage 1 and ninth in stage 2, showing plenty of pace.
His other results at road courses include three runner-up finishes and one pole during his 2016 K&N championship-winning campaign.
Haley also scored a win at Mosport in the Truck Series last year.
The Kaulig Racing driver is ninth in points with two top 5 and 14 top 10 finishes.
