CLE: Can the Cavaliers Improve on Their Perimeter Defence?
The Cleveland Cavaliers enter this game off the back of a loss to the Sacramento Kings. Not only were they outscored, but the Cavaliers' defence left much to be desired. Never the most capable team in terms of perimeter defence, they'll need to step up their game against the Warriors.
In their last game, a loss to the Sacramento Kings, the Cavaliers allowed their opponents to shoot 52.6% from the field and 43.6% from three-point range. Always known for their interior defence, have now allowed 34 three-point field goals in their last two games.
The Cavaliers allow their opponents to shoot an average of 36.0% from three, ranking them 19th in the NBA in three-point defence. The Warriors thrive off of three-point shots, so their mobile big men will need to show they can keep up with Golden State's ball movement.
Cavaliers Key Player: (G) Darius Garland
The Cleveland Cavaliers need all hands on deck when they take on the Golden State Warriors. A big factor in their loss to the Kings in their last game was the poor performance of Darius Garland. To beat the Warriors, Garland needs to keep the Warriors' defence honest.
In his last game, a loss to the Kings, Garland posted just 6 points and 8 assists in 33 minutes of play. He shot just 1 of 9 from the field, 1 of 4 from three, and committed 4 turnovers on the night. To say he performed poorly would be an understatement.
Garland's role has been lessened with the acquisition of Donovan Mitchell, but he needs to remain productive for the Cavaliers to be competitive. Against a Warriors team that haven't played the best defence this season, he should have the opportunity to bounce back.
GSW: Golden State Need to Take Care of the Ball
The Golden State Warriors finally found a win with a 116-113 victory over the Sacramento Kings. Before that was a dreadful 0-5 road trip. They averaged 16.0 turnovers per game during that run, something they learned from in their recent win.
In their last game, a win over the Sacramento Kings, the Warriors committed just 15 turnovers to 28 assists while shooting 50% from the field and 36.8% from three. Their defence was also engaged once again, allowing their opponents to shoot just 40.7% from the field and 35.0% from three.
The Warriors are famous for their passing ability, possibly more than their shooting ability. Ranking third in the league in assists per game (28.5), they need to improve on their assist-to-turnover ratio in order to limit Cleveland's chances.
Warriors Key Player: (G) Klay Thompson
The Golden State Warriors have fallen into a hole due to their defence this season. However, if they hope to keep up with the scoring aces of the NBA, Klay Thompson needs to return to form for the Golden State Warriors.
In Thompson's last game, a win over the Sacramento Kings, he posted 16 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds in 37 minutes of play. He shot just 6 of 18 from the field though while converting on just 3 of 10 three-point field goals.
The Cavaliers aren't one of the league's stronger three-point shooting teams, so Thompson will have plenty of opportunity in this matchup. If he can't support the Warriors with his scoring, they'll have a hard time keeping up with Cleveland's own scoring rate.
