Who Is the Favorite to Win the Eastern Conference in 2025?

Head Coach: Joe Mazzulla

Key Players: Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday

2024 NBA Playoffs:

  • NBA Finals: BOS defeated DAL 4-1

The Boston Celtics are the 2024 Eastern Conference Champions and the 2024 NBA Champions! They dominated their competition through the regular season and won the Larry O’Brien Trophy with just three postseason losses. As the season has come to a close, Boston’s focus has shifted to its championship defense, and it’s in an excellent position going into next year.

Jayson Tatum was leading the way through the regular season for Boston, who averaged 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 threes on 47.1% from the field. But come the playoffs, it was Jaylen Brown who led the way, putting up 23.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.9 threes per game en route to claiming the Eastern Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP awards. It’s important to mention their role players, though, as the combination of Holiday, White, and Porzingis was crucial to their success this season.

With Tatum, Brown, Porzingis, Holiday, and White locked in for next season, along with critical reserves Horford and Pritchard, the Celtics have their core available for their title defense. Contributors like Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet will test the free agent market this summer, so Boston must do their due diligence regarding recruitment. But going into next season, the Celtics project to be as strong as ever.

Who Are the Contenders to Win the NBA Eastern Conference in 2025?

Head Coach: Doc Rivers

Key Players: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton

2024 NBA Playoffs:

  • East First Round: IND def. MIL 4-2

The Milwaukee Bucks boldly moved during the 2023 NBA offseason by shipping out Jrue Holiday in exchange for scoring ace Damian Lillard. They also dropped new head coach Adrian Griffin in favor of Doc Rivers midseason. Neither move panned out, getting eliminated in the Eastern Conference First Round, and to add insult to injury, Holiday went on to win the NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics.

As expected, Giannis Antetokounmpo went on to lead the Milwaukee Bucks with an MVP-worthy season. He averaged 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 6.5 assists on 61.1% from the field. While Damian Lillard was impressed with 24.3 points and 3.0 threes in 42.4% shooting, he had his fair share of struggles throughout the season. As injuries set into the Bucks' roster, they lacked the depth to compensate to keep their season going.

Milwaukee will enter this offseason with eyes on improving its roster with few resources. The core of Antetokounmpo, Lillard, Middleton, and Lopez is secured. Still, Milwaukee paid the repeater tax on its fourth-ranked payroll last season, an ominous sign for its summer recruitment. Barring some significant moves, expect the Bucks to remain competitive with their core, but their chances at the Eastern Conference crown will be defined by who they can acquire to join them.

Head Coach: Nick Nurse

Key Players: Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris

2024 NBA Playoffs:

  • East First Round: NYK def. PHI 4-2

The Philadelphia 76ers are in a precarious situation going into the 2024 NBA offseason. They worked their way to the NBA Playoffs despite losing Joel Embiid for most of the season. Their health issues contributed to them falling short of their goals this season, and the Sixers will enter another offseason hoping they can stay on the court long enough to challenge for an NBA Championship.

Until he was ruled out for significant time due to injury, Joel Embiid was putting up another MVP-worthy campaign. His absence allowed point guard Tyrese Maxey to step into the spotlight, averaging 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.0 threes per game on 45.0% shooting en route to his first NBA All-Star appearance. As Philadelphia enters the offseason, all eyes are on who will join Philadelphia’s two-headed monster of Embiid and Maxey.

Entering the offseason, the Sixers are in a unique situation where all but four of their players are free agents. Centered around Joel Embiid, the Sixers have the opportunity to build their roster as they see fit in hopes of creating an NBA Championship-worthy side. Any team around Embiid projects to be competitive, but how they fill their roster this offseason could see the Sixers make a massive impact on the odds table.

2023-2450-322nd in NBA Eastern Conference 118.2 (7th of 30)113.4 (10th of 30) 95.2 (30th of 30) 112.8 (19th of 30) 108.2 (2nd of 30)

Head Coach: Tom Thibodeau

Key Players: Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, Josh Hart

2024 NBA Playoffs:

  • East Semifinals: IND def. NYK 3-4

The New York Knicks are coming off their most successful season in 24 years. After winning 50 games through the regular season, the Knicks finished second in the Eastern Conference ahead of the NBA Playoffs. Unfortunately, injuries derailed the Knicks’ progress, and they were eventually knocked out of the NBA Playoffs in the Second Round.

Starring for the New York Knicks this season was point guard Jalen Brunson. He was one of the league’s top players, averaging 28.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 2.7 threes on 48.9% from the field in his first All-Star season. Players like Josh Hart and Isaiah Hartenstein played a significant role, but OG Anunoby became a crucial player in the future after his midseason acquisition.

The New York Knicks have some decisions to make this summer. While Brunson, Hart, and Randle are locked in for the future, critical contributors like OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein will command interest from other teams during the 2024 NBA offseason. New York’s core is locked in, but how they improve the roster this offseason will decide if they can keep up with their rivals next year.
