WSN's Pick

Our Pick: Denver Nuggets to Win Western Conference (+230) at Caesars

The Denver Nuggets overcame their difficult start to the season and finished the first half of the schedule fourth in the West. Their competition is stronger than ever, with just three games separating them from the first seed. Still, their experience and Championship quality give the Nuggets the edge in the public’s eyes. Not to mention, reigning MVP Nikola Jokic has repeatedly shown that he can bring the Nuggets to victory by himself.

NBA Western Conference Winner Predictions

Who Is the Favorite to Win the Western Conference in 2024?

Denver Nuggets (+230) at Caesars Sportsbook

YearRecordFinishOff RtgDef RtgPacePPGOpp PPG
2023-2436-19, 4th in NBA Western Conference -117.9 (13th of 30)114.7 (11th of 30)96.7 (28th of 30) 113.9 (19th of 30)110.8 (6th of 30)

Head Coach: Michael Malone

Key Players: Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon

Key Additions: Justin Holiday

Key Losses: Bruce Brown, Jeff Green

The Denver Nuggets closed out the first half of their regular season by finishing fourth in the Western Conference standings. With the midseason break in full effect, the Nuggets are three games out of the top spot after surviving a challenging run of injuries to open the season. With some well-needed rest and few changes to their roster, the Nuggets are favorites to win the West this season.

To no one's surprise, Nikola Jokic led the Denver Nuggets through the first half of the season. The reigning MVP averaged 26.1 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 8.9 assists through 53 games. Also supporting him was Jamal Murray, who has played just 40 games but averaged 20.5 points and 6.5 assists while hitting 2.4 threes per game.

The West is more competitive than last season, and the Denver Nuggets have some ground to make up if they hope to claim the top spot. It'll be difficult for them, especially considering their depth issues. But with their talent and experience, betting against the Champion Nuggets can be challenging.

LA Clippers (+230) at Caesars Sportsbook

YearRecordFinishOff RtgDef RtgPacePPGOpp PPG
2023-2436-17, 3rd in NBA Western Conference -120.6 (3rd of 30)114.9 (13th of 30)97.9 (22nd of 30) 118.3 (10th of 30)112.7 (9th of 30)

Head Coach: Tyronn Lue

Key Players: Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, James Harden

Key Additions: James Harden, P.J. Tucker

Key Losses: Eric Gordon, Nicolas Batum, Robert Covington

The LA Clippers went from one of the least hopeful teams in the NBA to one of its most promising through the first half of the NBA season. Entering the All-Star break ranked third in the Western Conference, the Clippers are just two games out from the top seed, which they've occupied during different points of the season.

Having one of the healthiest seasons of his career, Leonard has led the Clippers with 24.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game on 52.7% from the field and 45.3% from three-point range. However, James Harden has been most impactful in the Clippers' season. Initially struggling to fit in, Harden has averaged 17.5 points and 8.4 assists for the Clippers as their primary playmaker.

Having already shown their quality through the first half of the regular season, LA's goal for the second half will be securing the top seed. Given their history, it's difficult to see their good fortune holding up in the health department. However, in terms of talent, there's no reason to believe the Clippers can't stand among the best in the West.

Who Are the Contenders to Win the Western Conference in 2024?

Phoenix Suns (+750) at Caesars Sportsbook

YearRecordFinishOff RtgDef RtgPacePPGOpp PPG
2023-2433-22, 6th in NBA Western Conference -118.5 (10th of 30)115.2 (15th of 30)98.7 (17th of 30) 117.6 (12th of 30) 114.3 (15th of 30)

Head Coach: Frank Vogel

Key Players: Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal

Key Additions: Royce O’Neale, David Roddy

Key Losses: Yuta Watanabe

The Phoenix Suns struggled through the first half of the NBA season, dealing with multiple injuries that derailed the expected momentum of their star-studded team. They still finished fifth in the West, but they're just one game ahead of their Play-In Tournament competitors.

The combination of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker helped lead the Suns through the first half of their regular season schedule. The pair combined for 55.7 points per game through the first half of the season, among the highest of any duo this season. While they received support from other contributors, Durant and Booker deserve the most praise after Phoenix's roller coaster of a first half.

When the regular season's second half begins, the Phoenix Suns must separate themselves from the pack. While they're the third-favorite to win the West, they're closer to a Play-In position than the conference's top. With a healthy lineup, the Suns could make some noise.

Minnesota Timberwolves (+750) at Caesars Sportsbook

YearRecordFinishOff RtgDef RtgPacePPGOpp PPG
2023-2439-16, 1st in NBA Western Conference -116.2 (17th of 30)108.8 (1st of 30) 97.5 (26th of 30) 114.0 (18th of 30)106.7 (1st of 30)

Head Coach: Chris Finch

Key Players: Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, Rudy Gobert

Key Additions: Monte Morris

Key Losses: Shake Milton, Troy Brown Jr.

The Minnesota Timberwolves had low expectations to start the 2023-24 NBA season, but they continued to prove their quality as the months rolled on. Finishing the first half of the regular season with the first seed, their top-ranked defense helped the Timberwolves reach their current ranking.

They are led by fourth-year guard Anthony Edwards, who has taken the next step in his career and leads the team with 26.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game. But they also have their frontcourt duo of Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert to thank, a pairing that powers their inside-out threat on both ends of the court.

When the second half of the season rolls around, the Minnesota Timberwolves must prove their success isn’t a fluke. Despite owning the top seed in the West, just three games are separating them from first and fourth place. The T-Wolves are far from safe at the top.
