Mavericks vs Jazz Game 2 Predictions and Pick

The Dallas Mavericks were red-hot from the field in Game 2 and it guaranteed their victory. However, their three-point shooting doesn’t project to be sustainable, while Utah have been more than capable of finding their offence against Dallas.

How Can the Mavericks Beat the Jazz?

The Dallas Mavericks were excellent in their last game, as they were led by the brilliant performances of Jalen Brunson and Maxi Kleber. When they face the Jazz in Game 3, Dallas will need to find production from more areas.

Simply put, the explosive performance of Kleber and Brunson in Game 2 isn’t sustainable. Outside of them, it was just Spencer Dinwiddie and Reggie Bullock who scored in double digits – combining to shoot just 10 of 25 on the night.

Dallas need more production from their role players if they want to take Game 3. Against one of the league’s best defensive teams, the Mavericks need to have a more equal approach to how they produce their points.

Mavericks Key Player: (G) Jalen Brunson

The star of Dallas’ show in their last game, Jalen Brunson went from role player to playoff star seemingly overnight. While his production in his last game was fantastic, his overall play in the absence of Doncic has been incredibly valuable.

In Dallas’ Game 2 performance, Brunson posted 41 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals on 42 minutes of play. He was tireless on both ends of the court, which helped Dallas to their victory.

Brunson is unlikely to score 40-plus points again, but he is a good shooter with the intelligence to move the ball in key situations. If his playmaking stays in form, the Jazz will have no answer for him.

How Can the Jazz Beat the Mavericks?

The Utah Jazz may not be as strong defensively as they’ve been in years past, but they should still have the edge over the pacey Dallas Mavericks. If they hope to take the lead in the series once again, they’ll need to limit the Mavericks’ three-point shooting.

Utah allowed Dallas to shoot 46.8% from three in Game 2, converting on 22 of their 47 three-point field goal attempts. That is well below Utah’s standards, as they allowed an average of just 12.1 threes per game through the regular season.

With Dallas going small, the Jazz struggled to recover on shooters. Whether they adjust their rotations or alter their defensive plan, the Jazz can’t allow Dallas to shoot so freely from three-point range.

Jazz Key Player: (G) Donovan Mitchell

Donovan Mitchell is doing his best to keep the Jazz competitive, but with his aggression, he needs to remain efficient so he doesn’t waste opportunities. In Game 2, Mitchell was unable to bring the game home for them.

Mitchell posted 34 points, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds in Utah’s Game 2 losing effort to the Mavericks. He got his numbers, but he shot 13 of 30 from the field and 3 of 10 from three to get them.

A talented scorer and a willing passer, Mitchell must involve his teammates in order to throw off the Mavericks. If he maintains his poor shooting and narrow vision, the Mavericks could quickly go 2-1 up on the series.
