How Can the Mavericks Beat the Suns?

The Dallas Mavericks have turned the tables on the Suns through this second round playoff series. After struggling to compete with the Phoenix Suns’ offence through the first two games, Dallas have turned their defence around.

After allowing the Suns to shoot 56.9% from the field and 45.3% from three in the first two games, the Mavericks held their opponents to 45.6% from the field and 41.5% from three in their last two. Most notably, the Dallas defence have forced an average of 17 turnovers out of the Suns in their last two games.

Their ball pressure has given Phoenix problems through their last two games, so Dallas must maintain it if they hope to win. If Phoenix gets back to moving the ball and scoring with efficiency, the Mavericks don’t have the quality to keep up on the scoring end.

Mavericks Key Player: (G) Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic has been frustrated with the refereeing through the Mavericks’ series against the Phoenix Suns, but it hasn’t stifled his production. With a more focused effort on getting to the rim, Doncic was able to lead his team to victory.

The Mavericks star posted 26 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds in 36 minutes of play. He hasn’t been incredibly efficient from the field, shooting just 9 of 25 from the field and 1 of 10 from three in Game 4, but his production speaks for itself.

Doncic needs to continue to score the ball, as the Mavericks can struggle when he isn’t on his game. If he can improve his efficiency from the field, they may be able to push the Suns to the brink of elimination.

How Can the Suns Beat the Mavericks?

The Phoenix Suns need to rediscover the magic that helped them to a 2-0 lead through the first half of this series. A big part of that will be finding consistent production from their role players.

With Chris Paul only playing a minimal role for the Suns due to his foul trouble, the Suns struggled to find playmaking. Devin Booker and Cameron Payne filled their role with 12 assists between them, but the Dallas defence found it much easier to find success and forced 17 turnovers.

Chris Paul playing a larger role won’t be the solution to all of their problems. Sporting a 27 to 17 assist-to-turnover ratio in Game 4, ball security will be just as important as distribution.

Suns Key Player: (G) Chris Paul

The NBA veteran and eventual hall of famer Chris Paul helped to carry the Suns while Devin Booker was out, but he struggled in Phoenix’s last game. If the Suns want to retake the lead in the series, Paul needs to be more productive.

In the Suns’ Game 4 loss to the Mavericks, Paul fouled out with just 23 minutes played. He posted just 5 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in the loss, attempting just 4 shots in that time. Without enough time on the court, the Suns struggled without their key playmaker.

Not only does Paul need to get his teammates involved in the offence early, but he must be a scoring threat as well. With the series tied, he can’t afford to coast through this game.
