BKN: Take Care of the Ball

The Brooklyn Nets hang their hats on their offensive play, very rarely intimidating their opponents with the stopping ability. Considering they give away their fair share of points, the Nets need to be cautious when they have possession.

In their last game against the Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn committed 17 turnovers to their opponents’ eight. However, the Nets were able to capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes, scoring 23 points off of Toronto’s eight turnovers.

On the second leg of a back-to-back, against a rested and able Chicago Bulls team, the Nets have a difficult task ahead. Chicago isn’t stifling with their defence like Toronto, but mitigating their own errors is how Brooklyn will overcome the Bulls.

Nets Key Player: (F) Kevin Durant

What more can be said about the Brooklyn Nets and Kevin Durant? He’s an all-time player, surely bound for the NBA Hall of Fame. So why is he the key for the Nets against the Bulls? It is his timely nature that makes up for many of Brooklyn’s shortcomings.

In a 116 to 103 victory over Toronto in their last match, Durant posted 31 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, in 37 minutes of play. It was a heavy workload for Durant, but his one-on-one ability carried Brooklyn when they found themselves down.

It is fortunate that the Nets have Durant to turn to when the chips are down. Against a Bulls team that can score as capably as them, the Nets need Durant in the decisive moments that their offence might be disjointed.

CHI: Time to Buckle Down

Through their opening nine games the Chicago Bulls have shown that their worthy of a spot at the top of the Eastern Conference. At the moment it is off the back of their scoring, but this matchup with Brooklyn is key if they want to convince the public that they can stop a top team.

The Bulls are coming off of a loss in their last game where they allowed their opponents to shoot 53.1% from the field and 50.0% from three-point range. That effort simply won’t cut, especially against an offence as highly powered as the Nets’.

While they’re energetic getting out to the three-point line, the Bulls have allowed their opponents to shoot over 44.8% (the league average) overall in four of their nine games. Limiting their opponent’s scoring is a must.

Bulls Key Player: (G) Zach Lavine

Zach Lavine sure can score the ball. However, when he’s facing off with stronger teams, he needs to be more efficient in order to keep his team competitive.

The Bulls All-Star is coming off of a game where he posted 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in 38 minutes of play. Unfortunately he was 3 of 10 from three, had 4 turnovers, and was a minus-14 on the evening.

Lavine draws so much attention, he should be a better playmaker. If he can get his teammates’ offence going as much as his own, the Bulls will be hard to stop.
