How Can the Sixers Beat the Raptors?

The Philadelphia 76ers suddenly look as if they have their backs against the wall, despite leading the series 3-2. If they hope to defeat the Raptors, Philadelphia needs to take care of the ball.

While the Raptors were expected to become weaker defensively with Fred VanVleet out of the lineup, instead they’ve been able to control Philadelphia’s offense. The Sixers shot just 38.3% from the field in Game 5, while committing 15 turnovers on the night.

The Raptors have decided to force Joel Embiid to make pressured decisions, which has worked as he led the Sixers with 5 turnovers on the night. Philadelphia needs to cut down on their turnovers and find quality shots to beat Toronto.

Sixers Key Player: (G) James Harden

To put it plainly, the Philadelphia 76ers need more production from James Harden. With Joel Embiid hobbled, Harden needs to lead the Sixers at the point of attack to eliminate the Toronto Raptors.

James Harden has struggled against the length of the Toronto Raptors. In Game 5, Harden posted 15 points, 7 assists, and 2 rebounds on 4 of 11 shooting from the field. To make things worse, he led the team in turnovers with 5 on the night.

The Sixers need Harden to get back to prime form if they want to beat the Raptors. He hasn’t been enough of a threat on offence, and his contributions on defence have been poor. If Harden can get his scoring going early, the Sixers can overcome their struggles.

How Can the Raptors Beat the Sixers?

The Toronto Raptors have rejuvenated the public’s interest in their ability to win the series, now owning home court advantage as they look to level the series. For all of their defensive improvements, the Raptors need to make Philadelphia pay from range.

Despite Toronto shooting 51.2% from the field in Game 5, they were just 25.8% from three-point range on the night. While their three-point field goals were timely, they’re giving up too many points due to inaccuracy alone.

The Raptors’ defence has been strong, but at times when it falters they need to make up for it with their scoring. As Philadelphia packs the paint, Toronto’s shooting will determine their chances at forcing a Game 7.

Raptors Key Player: (F-C) Precious Achiuwa

The Toronto Raptors’ second-year big man wasn’t projected to be such a large contributor for the Raptors this season, but his play against Joel Embiid has more than proven his ability. His two-way play has given Philadelphia fits on both ends of the court.

In Game 5, Achiuwa posted 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 26 minutes of play. He was just 1 of 5 from three, but was 7 of 11 from the field overall. Most surprisingly, his skill and athleticism were too much for Embiid to handle in their last meeting.

Achiuwa’s most important contributions will always be on the defensive side of the ball. But if he can continue to chip in on the offensive side of the court, the Raptors are in a good place to force Game 7.
