There certainly isn’t much to go on when considering what the Pistons do to take victory, but they’ll need to muster all they have and more to take down the Memphis Grizzlies.
Memphis are shorthanded but not lacking in the talent department. For Detroit, it will be all about hustle, as in wins they have a +3.7 rebounding differential, a +1.8 offensive rebounding differential, and a +5.1 free throw attempt differential to their opponents.
The Grizzlies are strong defensively in the paint and on the perimeter. Detroit will need to be efficient with shots and group-rebound if they hope to stave off the sheer physicality of Memphis.
WHAT ON EARTH
Saddiq Bey for the win in Detroit!!! pic.twitter.com/LbDHG8PSDA
— Rob Perez (@WorldWideWob) January 2, 2022
While eyes are usually on Pistons top pick Cade Cunningham, it was Saddiq Bey who led the Pistons to victory in their last match.
In an upset victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Bey posted 34 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists in 38 minutes of play. He was almost unguardable from deep, hitting 8 of 13 attempts from three-point range.
The Grizzlies are one of the poorer defensive teams in terms of three-point shooting, so Bey should focus on finding the looks he converts on so easily.

The Memphis Grizzlies can’t look past the Detroit Pistons as they hope to ascend up the Western Conference rankings.
The Detroit Pistons are an aggressive defensive team, opting to run teams off the line and into the paint. Memphis thrive in the paint, but with their rather pedestrian shooting ability they may play right into the Pistons’ hands.
To win the Grizzlies must make it a point to succeed at the rim and not settle for looks that Detroit give them. There’s no better rim-attacking guard in Ja Morant, but with current injuries and exclusions, there are questions around who has the consistency to support his efforts.

25+ PTS in FIVE-straight ?@JaMorant records 26 PTS, 5 REB and 6 AST to propel the @memgrizz to their sixth-straight win!pic.twitter.com/irWaQof3NT

At this point in the season, Ja Morant is showing the type of star that he is. Even though the Pistons are one of the league’s weaker teams, expect Morant to still pull off a strong performance.
Morant is coming off of a 26-point, 6 assists, and 5 rebound night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. While he didn’t have much opposition at point guard, he didn’t show the Cavs defense any disrespect.
The Grizzlies are facing one of the league’s poorest interior defenses. Morant should have another productive game.
