Last week, the 4-1 L.A. Chargers squeaked out a win over Cleveland, 47-42, thanks in big part to their mind-blowing quarterback, Justin Herbert, who threw for four TDs and zero picks for almost 400 yards while scrambling for first downs and a touchdown in that win, his growing connections with receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams giving defenses much to game plan around.
It was the talented arm of QB Lamar Jackson (37/43, 442 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT) tossing two touchdowns each to TE Mark Andrews and WR Marquise Brown that helped earned the Baltimore Ravens their fourth win of the season after pretty much losing to the Colts all game, but these Chargers might not give them as many chances as Indy did.
These two AFC rivals have met each other 13 prior times (including 1 postseason game), with the Baltimore Ravens winning 7 of those games and the Los Angeles Chargers winning 6 of the games.
One of the main reasons the Ravens keep winning is because their quarterback, Lamar Jackson, is able to use his speed, agility, and athleticism to scramble his way out of trouble and into first down territory time and time again.
Now it will be up to the Chargers’ defensive front line – EDGEs Joey Bosa and Uchenna Nwosu plus linemen Jerry Tillery, Linval Joseph, and rookie Forrest Merrill – to somehow contain Jackson when he starts getting his happy feet.
Easier said than done, although Jackson has been sacked 13 times already this season, proving that it is possible to get to him if only you can figure out how to trap him inside the pocket as it’s crumbling.
Baltimore is notorious for its tough defenses, especially the ones coordinated by Don “Wink” Martindale, which is why their 29th ranked pass defense in 2021 is somewhat shocking, the squad allowing almost 300 yards in the air against them every game.
That will be good news to the Chargers’ hot QB Justin Herbert, who has been lighting secondaries on fire with his accurate and powerful throwing arm that seems to find the open receiver for a completion 67 percent of the time.
It will take tight coverage by the Ravens’ secondary to limit Herbert’s options, so expect a big game here from cornerbacks Anthony Averett and Marlin Humphrey as well as from safeties Chuck Clark and DeShon Elliott who are most likely anxious to prove their defensive worthiness in Baltimore.
In his fifth NFL season, all with the Chargers, running back Austin Ekeler is proving his worth as the number one back on the team, his role as a 500+ rushing yards and 400+ receiving yards back in Los Angeles about to grow even larger.
Now dual-threat Ekeler is proving he has the stamina and the ability to manage more touches per game, this year leading the league in total touchdowns with seven as he has stepped up both his rushing and receiving production.
Last week in the win over the tough Browns, Ekeler was pivotal to the Chargers success as he carried the ball 17 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns while catching 5 passes for 53 yards and another score, contributions he needs to repeat on Sunday.
It was surprising to learn that Ravens tight end Mark Andrews only caught his first touchdown pass of the season in Week 5 against the Colts, and he followed that up with his second score of the year on his way to helping his team earn the overtime win.
