Kicking off the first game of the night not only on the Wednesday slate of games but also on national television is the Metropolitan Divisional matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers (7-7-1) visiting at the Carolina Hurricanes (9-6). Both teams are in the middle of the pack of potentially the toughest division in the NHL.
The Flyers have lost five of their last eight games of the season. They are on a two-game win streak with a 6-3 road win versus the Anaheim Ducks and a 4-2 road win over the Los Angeles Kings.
After a 3-4 start to the season, the Hurricanes have won six of their last eight games. Carolina is coming of a 4-0 win on the road this past Saturday over the Tampa Bay Lighting.
This game will be the second matchup of the season. Carolina defeated Philadelphia 3-2 on October 30 in Philadelphia. Three different players for the Hurricanes have scored in separate periods.
The Hurricanes are 13th in the league in goals per game (3.33) thanks to contributions from a variety of impact players. Carolina has six players who have accounted for 10 points this season. Their defense is the biggest problem as they rank 18th in points allowed per game (3.27).
The Flyers are 19th in the league in goals per game (3.2) thanks to their dynamic talent. They also have six players who have accounted for at least 10 points this season. Forwards Travis Konency (nine goals) and Cam Atkinson (eight goals) are more aggressive offensive players than the players for the Hurricanes.
The biggest factor is the defense of the Flyers, who are ranked 12th in goals allowed per game (3.07). The Flyers have limited great offenses of the Kings and the Ducks in scoring. Philadelphia has the winning streak and the defense to pull off the upset on Wednesday night.

The Seattle Kraken (5-8-3) and the Edmonton Oilers (4-9-1) are two of the most disappointing teams through the early portion of the 2023-2024 NHL Season.
The Kraken haven't played to the potential and productivity of their playoff-contending team last season. Their defense has fallen apart several times through this tough start. Seattle is currently on a two-game losing streak and has lost four of the last five games.
The Oilers only won two of their first 12 games of the season with the worst play coming from the defensive side of the ice. This terrible start resulted in the firings of head coach Jay Woodcroft and assistant coach Dave Manson. The Oilers defeated the New Islanders 4-1 on Tuesday night in the coaching debut of Kris Knoblauch.
This game will be the second matchup of the season between the Oilers and the Kraken. Edmonton previously defeated Seattle 4-1 on Saturday, November 11 thanks to three goals from Oilers forward Zach Hyman.
Edmonton, who had one of the league's worst defenses since the start of the season, has allowed an average of one goal per game. Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner has saved 49 goals in the 51 shot attempts in the last two games.
The Oilers have developed their best momentum on both sides of the ice this season. This win over Seattle can be a serious boost for a rebirth this early in the season to get back into playoff contention.
