There are set to be some close neck-to-neck matchups on Friday, but there are also set to have potential blowouts. The biggest on Friday currently is set between the #3 Gonzaga Bulldogs vs the #14 Grand Canyon Antelopes with the Bulldogs coming in as a 15.5-point favorite, according to Caesars Sportsbook.
The Bulldogs took a hit in the offseason with the departure of center Chet Holmgren and guard Andrew Nembhard going 2nd and 31st overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, respectively. Gonzaga still returns seven of the top scorers from last year as this team was one of the most efficient scoring teams from last year when they entered the 2022 NCAA Tournament as the #1 overall seed. Gonzaga ranks first in the nation in points per game (87.5) and first in field-goal percentage at 52.9%.
The Antelopes have not played well against more established despite playing a respectful defense. Two losses to consider for Grand Valley State are a 13-point loss to Nevada and a two-point loss to North Texas.
One of the closest set matchups on Friday in the Round of 64 is a surprising matchup of #5 Miami (FL) Hurricanes vs #12 Drake Bulldogs in the Midwest Bracket. Miami is currently going into this game as a 2.5-point favorite, according to Caesars Sportsbook.
Miami’s offense is tied for 24th in the nation in points per game, averaging 79.4 points per game. The defense for the Bulldogs is the biggest reason why they might be a problem. Drake’s defense gives an average of 63.9 points per game, which is ranked 32nd in the nation.
The Bulldogs are also +11.4 in point differential this season, which is 15th in the nation. They have been able to do against teams from more established conferences. Miami is a team that can fall behind if they cannot establish an offensive rhythm which could be tough for them going against the shutdown defense of Drake. If there is an upset on Friday in the Round of 64, this can be the Hurricanes falling.
One game that could be a big betting favorite is the over/under of the #5 Saint Mary’s Gaels vs #12 VCU Rams set at 123 points, according to Caesars Sportsbook. Both offenses average the same points per game at 71.4, but the biggest indication of a low-scoring game is on the defensive side of the ball. Saint Mary’s defense ranks fifth in the nation in points allowed per game (60.1) while VCU’s defense ranks 24th in points allowed per game (62.9).
In 33 games this season, Saint Mary’s offense has scored more than 72 points 17 times while also accounting for games where the defense of the Gaels allows teams to score more than 61 points 16 times. In 34 games this season, VCU scored more than 72 points only 15 times while their defense has held opponents to under 61 points 11 times.
In a battle of defensive juggernauts, this game could be the lowest-scoring game in the Round of 64, and why it might be smart to bet the under 123 total points.
