San Diego State will face its most formidable challenge of the NCAA Tournament when they take on 1-seed Alabama on Friday night. The Aztecs have won their games by a margin of 17.4 points per game, but their competition has been two of the lower-ranked teams in the tournament. San Diego State’s offense doesn’t project to maintain its efficiency, so they’ll need to be strong on the boards where they fall short of Alabama’s tournament average by 8.4 per game.
As expected, Alabama’s defense has made the difference and catalyzed their success as much as their shooting. Alabama has fully earned their 1-seed, cruising through the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament by winning each game by more than 20 points. The Crimson Tide’s offense has been a tale of two games, though, shooting 47.1% in the opening round but just 39.7% in the second round.

With just one more win, the Miami (FL) Hurricanes can book their ticket to the Elite Eight for a second straight season. Scoring 79.1 points per game on 48.1% shooting from the field, Miami (FL) and their offense will be tested against one of the country’s most formidable defensive sides. The Hurricanes have found success through their guard-play but must establish their offensive game early to beat the Cougars.
Houston has performed like a 1-seed through the NCAA Tournament, knocking out 16-seed Northern Kentucky and 9-seed Auburn in the first two rounds. The Cougars have dominated the glass through their first two games, winning the battle on the boards by an average of 8.0 per game. If Houston establishes their inside game against the Hurricanes, their defense is primed to push them through to the Elite Eight!

The Princeton Tigers have shocked the world by earning back-to-back upsets and look to make it a third when they face the Creighton Bluejays. The Tigers’ win margins have been relatively thin, but their success can be traced to their three-point defense, holding teams to 4.5 threes per game on 23.7%, and the fact that they’ve forced 10.0 turnovers per game through the tournament. Creighton has been threatening offensively, so the Tigers must be solid in their perimeter defense.
The Creighton Bluejays have knocked out 11-seed NC State and 3-seed Baylor in their run to the Sweet 16. When they face Princeton, the Bluejays aim to maintain their shooting form, which saw them hit 11 of 24 threes against Baylor. They’ll need to take care of the ball, though, as they’ve averaged 10.5 turnovers per game through the tournament.

The Xavier Musketeers performed as expected in the opening rounds and now face one of the toughest teams in the tournament in Texas. The Musketeers are coming from a win over Pittsburgh, where they received solid production from all players, with six of the seven who appeared in the match scoring in double digits and five of the seven shooting over 40.0% from the field. Texas is one of the country’s best two-way units, so Xavier must continue to get even production to beat the Longhorns.
After winning the 2-seed in the Midwest, Texas cleared the first and second rounds by beating 15-seed Colgate and 10-seed Penn State. Texas had a challenging second-round game against Penn State, as they were held to just one of 13 shooting from three, despite shooting 50.8% from the field and winning the rebounding battle 37 to 30. To beat the Musketeers, Texas must maintain their defensive quality for 40 minutes, or else Xavier’s versatility could overwhelm them.
