When: Thursday, October 31st at 6:30 AM EST.
Where: Shenzhen Bay Sports Center in Shenzhen, China
Head to Head Record: Kvitova leads 4-2
Most Recent Match: 2019 China Open Quarterfinals, Barty 4-6 6-4 6-3
Barty unexpectedly lost to Kiki Bertens in the second round, dropping her record to 1-1.
The current world No.1 does not have a spot in the quarterfinals, but only a very specific combination would prevent her from advancing.
With Naomi Osaka withdrawing from the competition, Barty’s road to the next round became significantly easier.
Kvitova, on the other hand, has a small chance of advancing to the quarterfinals.
The two-time Slam winner lost her two matches against Naomi Osaka and Belinda Bencic.
She could still add 250 points to the WTA rankings with a win in her match against Barty.
Only a very specific combination of results would send her through to the next round, however.
2019 Record: 53-12, 4 titles.
It’s been quite the breakout year for Barty.
The Australian won her first career Premier title as well as her first Slam title and rose to No.1 in the WTA ranking.
She could close out a dream 2019 with a WTA Finals trophy going up against the best players in the WTA circuit.
Her campaign got off to a strong start with a comeback win over Belinda Bencic.
After losing the first set, Barty dropped only three games through the rest of the match.
She then won the first set of her match against Kiki Bertens, but lost the next two.
Despite the unexpected defeat, only a very unlikely combination of results would leave her out of the quarterfinals.
Barty can still secure the top seed in her Red group with a win over Kvitova.

2019 Record: 37-15, 2 titles.
For the second year in a row, Kvitova could end the WTA Finals with a 0-3 record.
This time around, however, she still has a chance and could advance to the quarterfinals.
The two-time Wimbledon winner lost a close match in the opening round against Naomi Osaka.
She then lost to Belinda Bencic in round two.
Prior to this match, Kvitova had only dropped two sets in five matches against Bencic, holding a 4-1 record.
This result significantly affected her chances of getting out of the round robin.
The head to head numbers for Barty and Kvitova are quite interesting.
The two had only met twice before, with Kvitova winning both matches.
This year, however, has seen the pair clash a total of four times, splitting the wins.
Kvitova’s year began with a title at Sidney, taking down Barty 2 sets to 1 in the final.
She then secured a dominant 2-0 victory in the Australian Open quarterfinals, improving her record to 4-0.
Barty won their two most recent matches.
The first one was at Miami, with Barty capturing the win with a 2-1 score.
Their most recent meeting happened at Beijing two weeks ago, with Barty again winning it with a 2-1 score.
All four matches this year happened on the hard surface.
While Kvitova has the advantage overall, Barty is in better form heading into the duel.
Prediction: Barty 2-1, Over 21.5 games.
