This is an awkward opener in Dubai for Sinner, who has so far failed to live up to the great expectations placed upon him in 2021.

The Italian has been talked about as a future world number one but he’s looked rather weighed down by such predictions of late, losing three of his last five matches. Even in one of the victories, he was severely troubled by the unheralded Gregoire Barrere last week.

He’s also now got to deal with the move from indoor to outdoor tennis and that will be made more difficult by the quality of his opponent.

Bublik has started 2021 in fine form. He’s already appeared in two ATP Tour finals with wins over top-10 stars Matteo Berrettini and Alex Zverev on his record.

His serve is a big reason for his success and that produced no fewer than 17 aces on Sunday as he defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets, losing his own delivery just once.

Clearly, Sinner is a better player but also one struggling for form and so +185 about the underdog looks worth a try.

Chardy is another player who has made a flying start to 2021.

He’s beaten the likes of David Goffin, Ugo Humbert and Fabio Fognini in the early weeks of the campaign and also pushed Andrey Rublev to 6-4 in the decider.

With that sort of form, De Minaur will not strike fear into Chardy, particularly given he doesn’t have huge weapons in his arsenal. His best asset is his court coverage and maybe his renowned speed will enable him to grind down Chardy.

However, I’m not sure he should be around the -278 mark to win this match.

Conditions in Dubai are pretty quick and that was also the case in Melbourne where the Australian was well beaten by Fognini in the third round of his home Grand Slam last month. Across the two events staged at Melbourne Park, the home hope managed to go just 2-3.

De Minaur returned to action in Rotterdam last week but was beaten in his second outing by Kei Nishikori.

Conditions there were a world away from what they will be here this week and I like Chardy’s chances of the upset at odds of +215.

Best Outright Pick – ATP Acapulco

American John Isner looks a big price at +3300 to cause an upset in Acapulco.

The big-serving star has made the semi-finals on his last two visits to Mexico where his powerful delivery is able to get the ball through what are usually pretty sluggish courts.

Nick Kyrgios, Juan Martin del Potro and Sam Querrey are serving beasts to have won the title here since its move to the hard Solflex surface and Isner’s profile certainly fits the bill.

The reason he’s such a big price is he’s not played since January after opting out of the trip to Australia due to its enforced quarantine restrictions.

He’s instead been at home with his family and should be raring to go.
