Usman vs Covington 2 Early Odds

  • The rematch is set: the bad blood between champion Kamaru Usman and contender Colby Covington will reign over the welterweight division once again as the UFC names their rematch as the main event of UFC 267
  • Early odds peg the champion as the early betting favorite, but not by as much as one would think despite the lack in recent activity from the challenger
  • The two last fought in 2019 at UFC 245, with Usman coming out victorious

It is official: champion Kamaru Usman and top-contender Colby Covington will rematch for the welterweight title in the main event of UFC 267.

The two welterweights last met in the octagon in the main event of UFC 245 in December 2019. The fight, which was awarded fight of the night honors, was champion Kamaru Usman’s first title defense since winning the belt from Tyron Woodley earlier that year.

Covington entered the contest riding a seven-fight winning streak that included a win over Rafael dos Anjos to become the interim welterweight champion. Covington was eventually stripped of the interim title due to inactivity but kept his winning streak and top-contender status alive with a win over former champion Robbie Lawler.

The first fight between these two was an absolute barn-burner with the two fighters remaining mostly on the feet and deciding to slug it out despite both fighters being high-caliber wrestlers.

Ultimately, Usman secured the TKO victory in the fifth round when Covington apparently seemed to suffer a broken jaw (which he disputes to this day).

Since their first meeting, Covington has fought only once – defeating former champion Tyron Woodley via fifth-round TKO in September 2020. He has yet to fight in 2021.

Usman on the other hand has remained an active champion. He kept his winning streak alive (18 fights and counting) and defended his belt three more times since the first Covington fight. He defeated Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision at UFC 251.

He followed that win up with a third-round TKO victory over Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 and another win over Masvidal – this time by second-round KO – at UFC 261. Both of those performances earned the champion bonuses.

Despite the dominance of Usman’s reign as champion and the huge difference in activity, the early odds aren’t as imbalanced as one may think, with the champion coming in as an early -240 favorite over Covington’s -195.
