Thierry Henry scores and gets red carded shortly after

Henry scored his league leading 8th goal of the season against Portland Timbers (tied with Landon Donovan) and was shown red shortly after. The New York Red Bulls were trailing 3-1 before an Henry set the stage for the comeback through a nice buildup of play. Henry looked a bit of his past but carries a swagger now that he is living in the Big Apple.


The former Arsenal stud got in a little extra time altercation with Portland’s Adam Moffatt and gave a couple of pats/smacks/bitch slaps to the back of his head. Moffatt responded with a two-armed shove and Henry was disgracefully shown the red in a very controversial call for “violent conduct.” There was absolutely nothing malicious or dangerous about the foul. The linesman called the referee from across the pitch and forced the red.

NYRB eventually scored to come back and draw 3-3 in a wild finish. The Red Bulls will not be able to appeal the decision and Henry will have to sit the next game against Seattle Sounders.


For a league finally attracting quality players, I have to agree with the NYRB statement that the officiating was “completely unacceptable.” Eight red cards were given in the final 16 minutes as the game became more intense. A very lopsided 25 fouls were given in Portland’s favor to Red Bulls’ five. The American commentating was also shit. Fix that.
