PointsBet with Colonial Downs Launched its Mobile Sports Betting App in Virginia
Last week, Virginia bettors got their eleventh sportsbook to gamble with when PointsBet, in partnership with Colonial Downs, launched new mobile sports betting app, making this the eighth state in which the authorized online sportsbook is now operating.
According to Johnny Aitken, PointsBet USA CEO, his company will benefit Virginia punters by offering them speed and variety, saying in a press release:
We are thrilled to be launching in Virginia with our partner Colonial Downs, now bringing our best-in-market technology to such a passionate sports community. Virginian sports bettors will now have access to the fastest online sports betting product with the most betting options, including in-play capabilities.
PointsBet will be partnering with Colonial Downs, the group that owns the racetrack in New Kent County as well as the Rosie’s Gaming Emporiums in Hampton, Richmond, and other locations where bettors can gamble on historical horse races using slot machines.
Colonial Downs Group’s Chief Operating Officer Aaron Gomes thinks this new partnership is a good match, saying:
Colonial Downs is proud to partner with PointsBet, a premier sports betting platform and one of the most successful operators in the nation. We are pleased to help bring this gaming option to our loyal customers and other gamers in Virginia.
This partnership will have a brand spokesperson plenty familiar to Virginia sports fans.
NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson will Act as Brand Spokesman for Ads and Promos
Caesars Sportsbook might have actor J.B. Smoove as their popular spokesperson, but PointsBet will have a celebrity namesake that is not only recognizable to sports fans, but he is also a Hampton native, former NBA All-Star, MVP, and Hall of Famer Allen Iverson.

Nicknamed “the Answer” and “AI,” Iverson played 14 seasons in the NBA as well as represented the United States in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and is now regarded as one of the greatest ball handlers and one of the most influential players in NBA history.
Iverson will represent the sportsbook in advertisements and promotions and will no doubt make personal appearances to help strengthen the PointsBet brand name in Virginia.
This new partnership brings the total number of Virginia sportsbooks to eleven.
Virginia Lottery has Now Authorized 11 sportsbooks to Operate in the State
PointsBet is the 11th mobile operator to be granted a license in Virginia, a market that offers enough competition to give bettors there a variety of experiences, wagers, and odds.
The current list of Virginia sportsbooks looks like this:
- SportsBet
- Bally Bet
- Barstool Sportsbook
- BetMGM
- BetRivers
- Caesars
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- Golden Nugget
- Unibet
- WynnBET
Virginia’s General Assembly legalized sports betting in April 2020, and since January 2021, Old Dominion bettors have placed more than $2.3 billion in bets, a handle that has generated more than $14.3 million in tax revenue for the state.
Like over half the other states in the US now, Virginia has legalized, regulated, and taxed an existing activity that up until the start of 2021 was benefitting neighboring states and offshore sportsbooks instead of Virginia residents, but now that revenue stream has been coming home.
